Koch Brothers Making Play for Tribunes Newspapers
Source: New York Times
Three years ago, Charles and David Koch, the billionaire industrialists and supporters of libertarian causes, held a seminar of like-minded, wealthy political donors at the St. Regis Resort in Aspen, Colo. They laid out a three-pronged, 10-year strategy to shift the country toward a smaller government with less regulation and taxes.

(1,388 posts)in America that most of the media is owned and operated by wealthy persons or conglomerates. They have no news conscience and fail to do any real investigative reporting. Of course, a lot of the general public do not want to take the time to read any real journalism, which I say has lead us to the point we are in, in this country.

(67,107 posts)to the fact the USA is one of the most propagandized nations in the world. And in ranking among the industrialized nations the USA is at the bottom in many categories ... yet, many Americans believe the bullshit that other nations can not possibly do as well as the USA.
All the dirt in the USA is swept under the rug by corporate MSM with hardly a hit of any "real" investigative reporting. ... so, we have all of the deer in the headlight people wandering the lands parroting the inane MSM talking points.

(1,388 posts)people's perceptions of reality are vastly skewed. The most amount of reading done, besides small talking points from our news media, is bumper stickers. My brother is a prime example.
And speaking of reading and learning. Again, my brother. Just got elected to the local library board. The last book he started he did not finish because his crayon broke.

(1,805 posts)Not my LA Times! We've subscribed for at least 25 years since our county paper, The Press-Enterprise is a conservative POS. We'd have to switch to the SF Chronicle or the NY Times. The San Diego papers aren't any better. Damn, I love my paper and a cup of java in the morning. What awful news! Damn, I wish we could afford to move out of here.

(39,909 posts)These assholes want to be MORE than just RICH.
They want to be feudal War Lords from the Dark Ages,
and WILL succeed if WE don't stop them.
Our neighbors in Latin America have given us a Blue Print that will stop them.
They have successfully taken their countries back from the hands of their 1%.
All we lack is the will.

Anyway, now what can we do about this? Not much, I fear.

and that the Koch Bros. overpay.

(58,162 posts)although it has some what moderated over the years the kock bros purchase won't be a really big change in the direction of the newspaper. anyway most people could care less what the editorial content of the paper is.

(18,628 posts)If the newspapers all turn into New York Post like propaganda machines they should all fade away and die.
Sad though.
And it's difficult to know who does real reporting nowadays.

(71 posts)The Oregonian of Portland, Oregon was bought as a Right Wing vanity press a few years ago. They have destroyed many good hearted politicians and they very nearly were successful in getting an ex basketball player Republican elected as governor. They destroyed a mayoral candidate who was a better choice. Now they are going after a fine city councilman who is a selfless public servant. They hate public employees and government. Buying a newspaper and blasting your shabby opinions can have real results. Most people are too busy to be well informed and read between the lines. I so wish this weren't true!

(50,557 posts)Let me see...there aren't that many birdcages to line and puppies to housebreak in the LA Basin, fishmongers and fish & chip shops don't use newspaper to wrap your purchases anymore, there are better things than newspaper to use as drop cloths, and Orange County already has a right-wing rag. I think that if they buy the Los Angeles Times, they'll either sell or close it within a year because the people in LA can see through the Kochs' bullshit.
