Boston Police Chief: ‘From What I Know Right Now’ Suspects Acted ‘Alone’

Source: TPM

IGOR BOBIC 12:54 PM EDT, SATURDAY APRIL 20, 2013

Boston police chief Ed Deveau told CNN on Saturday that given current available information about the case, the Boston marathon bombing suspects likely acted alone.

"Do you believe there are any other suspects out there at large, any collaborators, co-conspirators, anyone we should be concerned about? Based on everything you know?" asked CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

"From what I know right now, these two acted together and alone," Deveau said. "I think it's an eye opening experience to me, to our police department, to our community and to the United States and the world that we're in a different state here. I think we have to be ever vigilant and we're learning as we go along but as far as this little cell or this little group, I think we got our guy."

"We got our two guys," he added.

Sort of scary too that any one individual can carry out an attack like this. Or in this case two individuals. But, I think he is right and they have evidence to show or lack of communication between them and other groups that would help rule out a bigger conspiracy.

Other than their competence in bomb building, which they could have learned over the Internet and perfected via practice, these guys acted like they had didn't have the first clue as to what they were doing or any inkling of a complete plan. Nor did they have access to any resources outside of their own.

They thought they had gotten away with it right up until the FBI released the video of them walking together.

3. Uncle: Mentors 'radicalized' older Boston bombing suspect

The uncle of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects told TODAY Saturday that he believes Dzhokar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were pawns in a deadly scheme.

"I strongly believe they were just puppets and executors of something of bigger scale," Ruslan Tsarni told Savannah Guthrie.

...

Tsarni, a Maryland resident who is the brother of the suspects’ father, believes Tamerlan, 26, who died in a confrontation with police early Friday morning, was radicalized by others. He noted that the suspects were in his house as children, and recalled a surprising transformation the last time he saw Tamerlan in 2009.

“There certainly were mentors,’’ Tsarni said. “I was shocked when I heard his words, his phrases, when every other word he starts sticking in words of God. I question what he’s doing for work, (and) he claimed he would just put everything in the will of God. It was a big concern to me. He called me 'confused' when I started explaining to him, make yourself useful to yourself and to your family and maybe you’ll have extra to share with everybody else.

But I don't believe for a second that the older brother wasn't working on behalf of an overseas group.

I'm sure an investigation into his 6 months overseas will reveal any ties.

Why else would they hang around Boston for three days (not having the first idea that they would be caught on camera at one of the most photographed sporting events in the US), then try to desperately rob a 7-11, carjack a vehicle, and sloppily kill a cop on the one night when they suddenly realized they'd been called out?

There was nothing professional or organized about these two. This whole thing reminds me of the DC sniper episode. You'd be amazed what evil things a motivated crazy person and his awestruck little protege can accomplish.

... That was debunked in the presser w/ authorities last night. Sucks for them that they decided to make a Slurpee run at the same time some "average criminal" was there.

IMHO since they had another pressure cooker & all those grenades on them, and were creeping around MIT, they didnt leave Boston because they planned to bomb a few other places in the days after the Marathon.

They literally would not have had time to build the bombs in the few hours between learning they were suspects and the 10:30 start to their wild ride. They'd stocked up before on the bombs.

Maybe they'd planned to use them in a wild exit when the authorities came for them, but they definitely had been planning some other mayhem.

professionalism of the Boston cops throughout this awful time. No fear-mongering, no grandstanding, only a just-the-facts approach. And I do not like cops as a general rule. They were a shining example of the way police should act.

The media reported that there was a suspect in custody at a Boston hospital. You could tell the Boston police chief was angry when he said it was not the case.
