Nicolás Maduro to be sworn in as president after audit vote deal

Source: The guardian

Hugo Chavez's successor, Nicolás Maduro, will be inaugurated as president of Venezuela on Friday as post-election tensions began to calm thanks to officials' promise to audit the vote that put him in power.

The disputed outcome of last Sunday's poll has prompted violent protests this week and highlighted the domestic and regional faultlines that Maduro will have to deal with during his six-year term.

Red-shirted supporters have begun gathering in the streets to celebrate the swearing-in of the former bus driver at the national assembly later on Friday. Latin American and Chinese leaders are also flying in to demonstrate their solidarity.

But the opposition have threatened to protest against the event and the US, Panama and Paraguay have so far declined to recognise the result of the closely fought presidential poll.

1. If the opposition protests, they should be crushed

They've already shown they're willing to burn down houses and murder supporters of Maduro.

3. So the opposition should be allowed to continue to murder Maduro supporters?

And burn down their houses?

Not authoritarian, protecting the peace.

Those are separate activities.

Just to be clear--if they peacefully protest, do you agree that it would be grossly inappropriate to 'crush' those protests?

5. Why give them a chance to assemble when they've already shown what will happen?

More violence. More deaths.

All because they lost an election. An election Capriles said beforehand he wouldn't recognize the results of if he lost.

And I also know that sounding like you're calling for heads to be broken is NOT going to help.

That's basically what you're saying.

How naive to believe the opposition wouldn't resort to violence when assembled.

12. You've just made the argument for sending the police in to crush an Occupy encampment.

The cops in every large U.S. city argued that, if you let those people stay together, violence would EVENTUALLy break out.

For the love of God...get a hold of yourself!

6. They should be stopped from committing violence...not "crushed".

Maduro isn't a Stalinist...and neither was Chavez.

How much do you know of what the opposition has done since the election?

How much of it would you tolerate in this country before taking drastic action against it?

13. Define "drastic action".

I'd arrest the violent. I wouldn't just go Mayor Daley on everyone in the streets, which is what it sounds like you're advocating.

You're also forgetting that a hardline response to the Capriles people in the streets would be exactly the sort of pretext the U.S. would be looking for to "send in the Marines"...and don't think Obama WOULDN'T go there.
