Search for marathon bombing suspect locks down Watertown, surrounding communities

Heavily armed tactical police are searching a 20-block area of this community for one of the suspects in the deadly Boston Marathon terror bomb attacks, a State Police spokesman said.
The search comes after a chaotic, violent night in which a second suspect died in a firefight with police, and one police officer was killed and another was seriously wounded.
Local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, including the Secret Service, are searching. K-9 teams, explosives experts, and SWAT officers are involved, said State Police spokesman David Procopio.
Authorities cannot rule out the possibility that the suspect is wearing an explosive vest, Procopio said.

WBZ-TV LIVE VIDEO: http://boston.cbslocal.com/live-video/
WBZ radio is now simulcasting WBZ television ongoing coverage of the MIT incident and now arrests.
(Update) WBUR public radio at 3:22am ET:
Also at 3:03 am ET: "WCVB reports @massstatepolice see "strong link" to MIT murder, possible connection to Marathon bombings."
4 am: Boston police chief tweets: "One suspect dead. One at large. Armed and dangerous. White hat suspect at large." So the man in the black hat is no longer living, presumably due to the firefight.

The two shooters, he said, had a large and unwieldy bomb. They lit it, still in the middle of the gunfire, and threw it. But it went 20 yards at most. It exploded, he said, and one of the two men ran towards the gathered police officers. He was tackled, but it was not clear if he was shot, Mr. Kitzenberg said.
The explosions, said Loretta Kehayias, 65, another resident, lit up the whole house. I screamed. Ive never seen anything like this, never, never, never.
Meanwhile, the other you man, said Mr. Kitzenberg, got back into the SUV, turned it toward officers and put the pedal to the metal. The car went right through the cops, broke right through and continued west.

Don't know why the first pic won't show, but click the link. These are good pics, first guy may be smirking. Jeff Bauman said that he saw one of them look him in the face and leave his bag right in front of him. The guy was just looking at him and knew that he would be killed and walked off and then the bomb went off. He identified the faces shown him in the hospital. Most likely the bomber thought he'd killed him and there would be no witness. Then it turned out he lived and that must have put the wind up these guys.

(2,730 posts)where this violence is occurring, it appears to be an upscale community, around MIT which is a private University. MIT is a very good science school also. I imagine many of the alumni have a scientific background. I bet the suspects weren't poor and they seem to be very smart at improvising. What I mean by that, they seem to have some knowledge of building crude weapons.
Dan Ken
(149 posts)about 3-4 miles removed from MIT campus.
The two bombing suspects may or may not have any official connection to MIT. MIT campus is in an urban area, only about a mile from the bomb site Monday in Boston, across the Charles River. The MIT campus is a relatively open campus to anyone who might walk into any of their buildings.
Gormy Cuss
(30,884 posts)The second scene in the next community down the river --IMHO the suspects probably drove down Memorial drive--and again in a neighborhood with mixed apts, condos, single family, and commercial.
The area around MIT is most decidedly not upscale except for the new condos. Some parts of Watertown are quite nice and expensive but not the neighborhood where this action is taking place. It's nice enough but not upscale.
Where did you get the information that these suspects are from MIT?
John2
(2,730 posts)were from MIT or might have some relations because of the area this violence is occuring in? I thought I said MIT is a private university and a very good science school. I'm also understanding the activity of violence began with a policeman being shot and killed at MIT. The speculation is no different than someone continuing to claim it is some Islamic Terrorist or Persian. It could well be home grown. It also appears these suspects have some resources and more knowledge than an ordinary American about making crude weapons. It suggests to me they have some scientific background they gained from somewhere. It is no more arm chair quarterbacking than some are during on this Board. In fact one expert said if it was home grown, they would be caught in 24 hours. They apparently got names and good leads from people who knew the suspects. note: well one policeman says he believes this to be a foreign terrorists. So that is now noted.

They just said that suspect #1 is dead, that supect #2 with the white hat is still on the loose. Say he is armed with a rifle and leaving IEDs wherever he goes. They have cut off cell towers to stop detonations. This is tweet from the Boston police.
DA say investigating two men at MIT shooting officer, shot in his vehicle, then highjacked another vehicle in 3rd street, held victim in car and left off at Mobil station in Cambride. PD pursued, explosives thrown out of the care, gunfire at Dexter and Laura. Suspect #1 dead.

Interesting that they held onto for a while, then let the owner of the car they stole go, letting them off at the gas station. After all, these guys didn't think twice (if the station is correct - and they are reading tweets from the Boston PD saying so) that these are the bombers.
It seems like they'd kill anyone. So the driver of the car had a lucky break. I just hope there isn't anyone held hostage in that house.

(149 posts)MIT is heartbroken by the news that an MIT Police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty on Thursday night on campus, near Building 32 (the Stata Center). Our thoughts are now with the family.
At around 2 a.m., MIT Police determined that the suspect was no longer on campus, and that it is safe to resume normal activities. However, the MIT Police ask that members of the MIT Community remain vigilant in the coming hours.
MIT worked with multiple police departments in order to ensure the safety of the MIT campus. Police officers swept the campus in search of the shooter, and MIT sent text and email messages to the members of the MIT community asking them to stay indoors while the search continued.
We will provide fuller news of this tragedy in the coming hours.

(98 posts)In indonesia they mostly recruit teenagers even as young as fourteen because the recruiters can easily brainwash them by showing videos and pictures of the victims in Gaza or Bosnia and making them believe that the US and its allies are their enemies. Next they will disconnect them from their families, the recruiters will make them believe that if their family don't agree with the Islamic teaching as preached by the terrorist groups then they are part of the infidels, that's why in Indonesia they also put a bomb in a mosque a few times because they think the majority of muslims are actually non-muslim. Their parents will never have a clue since their children will never say anything to the "enemy". If Dzhokhar really has a link to Al Qaeda I doubt if he really wanted to visit his parents on holidays.
The Tsarnaev brothers look like perfect recruits to me judging by their age, not to mention they can blend easily in the US
Then again.. we still don't know if there's a link between these guys and international terrorist groups
