Republicans pull plug on Mark Sanford

Source: Politico

National Republicans are pulling the plug on Mark Sanford’s suddenly besieged congressional campaign, POLITICO has learned — a potentially fatal blow to the former South Carolina governor’s dramatic comeback bid.

Blindsided by news that Sanford’s ex-wife has accused him of trespassing and concluding he has no plausible path to victory, the National Republican Congressional Committee has decided not to spend more money on Sanford’s behalf ahead of the May 7 special election.

Mark Sanford acknowledged in a statement Wednesday that he visited his wife’s beach house without her permission to watch the Super Bowl with their son. But Jenny Sanford, in her complaint, said it was part of a “pattern of entering” her home.
Meanwhile, the Washington Post has learned that tensions within the family flared up as recently as April 2, at the celebration of Sanford’s runoff election victory when the former governor thrust two of his sons on-stage with the Argentine woman who was at the center of the spectacular sex scandal that broke up his marriage.

9. Ex-Wife Says Mark Sanford Has a Habit of Trespassing in Her Home

Apr 2013
http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/04/ex-says-sanford-has-been-trespassing-in-her-home.html

Jenny Sanford's lawyer said in a complaint filed the next day that the former governor has "entered into a pattern" of trespassing in the house, and his ex-wife has spoken to him about it on "a number of occasions."

Mark Sanford is now due in court two days after he challenges Elizabeth Colbert Busch for a vacant congressional seat. Jenny Sanford says the date was set by the court, and insists she isn't trying to sabotage the election. "I am doing my best not to get in the way of his race," she told the AP. "I want him to sink or swim on his own. For the sake of my children I'm trying my best not to get in the way, but he makes things difficult for me when he does things like trespassing."

Jenny Sanford: I Didn’t Leak Report on Ex-Husband

Former South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford told The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday night that she was trying to stay out of her ex-husband Mark Sanford’s bid to return to public life, and didn’t leak a report that he had trespassed at her home earlier this year.

Ms. Sanford confirmed the authenticity of documents obtained by the Associated Press that detailed a report that Mark Sanford had trespassed at Ms. Sanford’s home, using a mobile phone as a flashlight.

“Those documents the AP has are legit,” Ms. Sanford said, in an email to The Wall Street Journal. “They deal with a number of private domestic matters and it was my understanding they were to remain sealed along with our divorce documents. I did not choose to make this information public nor did I choose the timing of his last trespassing.”

National GOP abandons Mark Sanford

The National Republican Congressional Committee on Wednesday took the unusual step of telegraphing that it will not spend money on his special election campaign.

“Mark Sanford has proven he knows what it takes to win elections. At this time, the NRCC will not be engaged in this special election,” the NRCC said in a statement, which was first reported by Politico.

A committee aide confirmed that the statement meant the committee is done with Sanford.

as for the affair--yes, people fall out of love, it happens. but when the person falling out of love, and having the affair, is a so-called "family values" conservative who was foaming at the mouth over pres. clinton and monica lewinski, a governor who left the state without telling anyone he was leaving (against SC charter), and who used state funds to engage in his affair, AND who embarrassed and humiliated his wife on national tv by referring to his paramour as his soul-mate, you will forgive people for having a rather jaundiced view of this lying, sanctimonious, self-righteous, hypocritical, arrogant, clueless POS.

Wed Apr 17, 2013, 09:11 PM

Marital 'fidelity' should play absolutely NO role, in and of itself, when it comes to the decisions related to 'custody of the children'. Neither should one spouse's 'hypocrisy' when it comes to 'attacks on the former President'. Neither should be the slightest bit 'relevant'. I find it astounding to hear that anybody seriously thinks it should even be considered. That's crazy and wrong to me, personally.

And I'd wager that the VAST majority of people would consider what the Big Dog did was 'had an affair'. It clearly was not a 'one-time drunken escapade', put it that way. It was an ongoing thing, hence ... an affair.

I'm certainly no Stanford 'supporter', but in the overall spectrum of 'crimes', watching the SB with your son at your ex-wife's house while she's away falls pretty 'low' in terms of 'severity', at least from where I sit.

Doesn't stop me from gloating at his misfortune of having his funds cut off though

do you not get? the sons cannot give legal permission for him to enter her home, PERIOD.

I didn't say his blatant, lying, self-righteous hypocrisy should have had anything to do with his custody, or lack thereof. I was pointing out to another poster that, unlike his comment, I do not claim to lead a perfect life, nor am I hypocritical.

I am finding the excuses for his behavior on this thread, alas, not in the least surprising.

Wed Apr 17, 2013, 10:43 PM

A fairly logical conclusion based on your wording, which was basically "even CHEATERS should have joint custody? are you SERIOUS?"

Hence my, um ... consternation. Forgive me if I missed something obvious there, but I submit to you that it appears you are now 'walking back' what you said originally

And I'm not 'justifying' the 'trespassing', per se ... I'm just saying that it's a very petty crime in the overall scheme of things.

I also (obviously) wouldn't agree with denying the man (or any man, or any woman) joint custody purely on the basis of 'infidelity' alone. I don't know the laws in that state, but I somehow wouldn't be shocked if, in that particular state, infidelity IS 'considered' in custody proceedings ... which, personally, I think would be egregiously wrong.

"The national Republicans just launched a blitz attack on Elizabeth. Lies and misinformation flooded mailboxes across the 1st District. And we are less than 12 hours away from the biggest fundraising deadline we’ve ever had.

Our team has spent all week using an aggressive grassroots approach to reach our goals in the face of this onslaught. But - we are just $28,844 short for what we need to raise before the final reporting deadline.

There won’t be a second chance at this – we need to hit this goal and show that we are capable of responding. We are less than 20 days away from electing a real representative for South Carolina, one who will fight for the middle class, seniors and women.

Even just $5 gets us $5 closer to the end-of-the-quarter goal. Grassroots donations of $25, $50, and $100 are what built this campaign, and are what will keep it running.

Please click here to contribute before the urgent deadline at midnight tonight."
