Suspicious Letter Sent to President Obama, Link to Ricin Letter Investigated

Source: NBC New York

A suspicious letter sent to President Obama and received at an off-site location away from the White House is being investigated as possibly linked to another mailing with ricin sent to a senator, NBC 4 New York has learned.

The letter to Obama contained a "suspicious substance," authorities said.

"A letter addressed to the president was received at a remote screening facility containing a suspicious substance. We are working closely with Capitol Police and the FBI in this investigation," a Secret Service spokesman said.

WASHINGTON • Law enforcement officials say a second letter sent to the U.S. Senate has been intercepted and is being tested for poisonous ricin.

Two officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the letter was being treated in the same manner as a separate one sent to Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker and was undergoing field tests.

The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.

The letter to Wicker, a Republican, was intercepted at a Senate mail facility just outside Washington and has tested positive for ricin. Sen. Claire McCaskill has said authorities have a suspect in mind in that case, though no one has been charged.

It was not immediately clear which senator the second letter was addressed to.

A letter addressed to President Barack Obama tested positive for the poison ricin and was from the same sender who mailed a letter to a senator that also tested positive, officials told NBC News on Wednesday.

The letter to Obama was received at an off-site White House mail facility and was being tested further, a Secret Service official told NBC News. A federal law enforcement official said that the letter was "very similar" to one addressed to a senator that tested positive in preliminary screening for ricin.

Authorities cleared the atrium of a Senate office building Wednesday, but it was not immediately clear why. Capitol police were also investigating a suspicious package at the office of Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala. Shelby's staff had not been evacuated.

Except with more malice.

We've had assassinations of prosecutors and state officials; we've had a terror bombing; and now we have attempted poisonings of two federal officials, including the president.

It might be a coincidence, but the timing's certainly intriguing.

The first one went to Wicker, Republican who didn't support the initial filibuster.

Our last lethal mailing to Congress (anthrax) was sent to Daschle and Leahy, who were trying to stop the Patriot Act. Of course it was also helpful to the build up to the Iraq war.
