2 explosions at Boston marathon finish line

Source: AP

BOSTON (AP) — Two explosions shattered the finish of the Boston Marathon on Monday, sending authorities out on the course to carry away the injured while stragglers in the 26.2-mile race were rerouted away from the smoking site.

Competitors and race volunteers were crying as they fled the chaos. Bloody spectators were being carried to the medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners.

"There are a lot of people down," said one man, whose bib No. 17528 identified him as Frank Deruyter of North Carolina. He was not injured, but marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding.

Neither race officials nor public officials could immediately estimate the number or degree of injuries.

I remember my first thoughts when they broke the news fo the OKC bombing, being that it was a gas pipeline explosion. It was not an accident.

I even had incredulity when I'd woken up early the morning of 9/11 and turned on the teevee to catch the weather. The first plane had hit one of the towers and I thought it was accidental like the one that plowed into the ESB decades before. I said to myself, 'What an idiot.'

Then I saw the next plane hit the other tower and then began mesmerizing coverage that went on for days. I've worked in high rises and watched as the emergency workers went in again and again and didn't get survivors. I kept holding out hope that they would. I could not even look at pictures of the WTC for some years afterward.

People expect the worst now...

at a hotel. Don't know if something went off or if they just discovered it. By this point, they may have retracted it for all I know.

But, this is part of the first "news" rush, so we don't know how accurate it is.

So after 9/11, is your first assumption "accident" or something more intentional?

I was the same, by the way, with OK -- it think it's because it's so difficult for us to wrap our head around what we're seeing. It's almost surreal.

On 9/11, I awoke to the news on the radio and called a friend of mine back East who was filling me in on my way to turn on the TV. Even then, even knowing, it was almost impossible to absorb what had happened.

Interesting times, interesting times.

It looks like too much smoke for a gas line or even most bombs. It's consistent with and electrical source. At least I hope that's the case.

Whatever it is, it's a damned shame.

I never went to the finish line there. I always stayed along the last mile of the route, cheering on runners who were dead on their feet by the time and needed encouragement.

Funny, I'd never even heard of it until I moved there in the late 60s.

ETA: ugh, it was a bombing. My bet is that it's some right wing anti tax jackoff who was whipped into a frenzy by that asshole Howie Carr and other right wing radio hacks.

The "teroristm expert" insinuating that "we don't know what it is" but we have to watch out if this will hit other cities.

CNN producer on ground said he didn't see any fire..just smoke and he couldn't tell what it was when he saw the first smoke explosion the second was less he said. He saw 6 or 7 people being treated.

There's nothing new so far except Blitzer and the Terrorism Expert (I think there are two of them on now) doing their CNN thing to whip up fear.

No one knows yet what it is so I guess they have to talk about something...but, given CNN's track record it's usually about terrorism or war...

Two explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon have resulted in injuries.

There were two booms heard from near the finish line inside the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel.

Race officials locked down the hotel because of the report.

The sound of two booms, which sounded like thunder, had come a short time earlier.

38. 2 explosions at Boston marathon finish line
Mon Apr 15, 2013, 03:26 PM
Apr 2013

Two explosions shattered the euphoria of the Boston Marathon finish line on Monday, sending authorities out on the course to carry off the injured while the stragglers in the 26.2-mile trek from Hopkinton were rerouted away from the smoking site of the blasts.

Competitors and race organizers were crying as they fled the chaos.

About three hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another thunderous explosion could be heard a few seconds later.

I'm leaning toward the wing nut because he could not be at both blast cites at once, so they were probably both remotely triggered. I'm thinking only one man is the culprit because the bombs did not detonate at the same time, suggesting he set one off then the other. I'm thinking it was a man because men commit the vast majority of violent crimes.

I'm guessing this is an anti-abortion thing, and anti-gun control thing, or a general anti-Obama/liberals thing.

Just thinking that with instant social media comes instant gratification to be the first to spread the news. It doesn't mean that that news is necessarily correct, especially when one Tweets his speculation on what "may" have happened. I think Twitter will spell the death of responsible "fact based" reporting, and will eventually be a poor substitute to gathering up enough evidence for solid, credible stories.

the winner had crossed but it takes hours after that before the last races cross the finish line. You have to qualify to run the Boston (there are speed minimums you have to meet for your age group etc). However, there are those that are given permission to race that are not qualified via the process a normal runner has to go though (physically disabled veterans etc are running this year).

In a race this large people both start the race and end the race at staggered times. The top qualifiers start first, thats how the winner was known already.

It's a fascinating sport. My heart goes out to all the runners as well. All that training and excitement to be met with this. It's really unfortunate, regardless of the cause.

Mon Apr 15, 2013, 03:43 PM
Apr 2013

Race started in 3 waves: 10:00, 10:20, 10:40. Timing starts when the individual crosses the start line.

Most of the runners had finished but there were still thousands finishing.

Since you need to qualify for Boston with a fast time, the average is faster than most marathons. Most big marathons the average finish is more like 4hrs 30min... about exactly when the bombs happened.

IF this was terrorism, it might have been timed to go off when most runners were finishing.

Mon Apr 15, 2013, 04:18 PM
Apr 2013

First, let's be clear. The victims are the primary victims here, and should be in our hearts and our thoughts.

When the fallout occurs: If this was caused by terrorists, then the legacy of the Iraq war and Bush's war on terror and his New World Order were the instigators of the attack.

If this was caused domestically, then it is because of the economic conditions that have permeated this country due to the GOP policies that make the rich richer and the poor poorer.

Cut it any way you like, no matter what happens: The GOP is 100% responsible for this attack. Every victim, every person who is witnessing this horror should never forget that very salient point.

It may seem insensitive to be bringing this up now, but this is extremely important and must be brought to light.

We just don't know who did it or why. As far as the legacy of the Iraq war and Bush's war on terror goes, terrorism was alive and well in this world long before either of those events happened. And if it is domestic it could have been caused by any number of things and not necessarily economic conditions. Or it could have been an apolitical nut. We just don't know at this point.

It IS a fact that no matter how the bombing investigation goes, the very foundation of the bombings can be traced to the existence of the GOP in the United States. Whether it's by a Rush Limbaugh-loving right wing lunatic like McVeigh, or an oppressed dissident from a middle-eastern country, the roots are based upon hatred that conservative and oppressive politics unleashes.

"I was there at the finish, shooting finish line scenes, and then bang, it just went off, and then less than 15 to 20 seconds after there was a second explosion, closer to Fairfield street," Silva said.

"It was just immediately [evident] there were injuries, right in the middle of the spectator crowds. There was blood everywhere, there were victims being carried out on stretchers. I saw someone lose their leg, people are crying, people are confused."

"It was just an explosion, it came out of nowhere. There are multiple injuries. I saw dismemberment, I saw blood everywhere. People are badly injured."

The Green Line subway between Kenmore and Park is shut down. The whole subway system isn't shut down, though. That's per WBZ here in Boston.

I also haven't heard a word about cancellation of MBTA buses--so that's a way to get around the city.

They are busing people to the Common via schoolbus to clear the area.

Cellphone service has been shut down, per WBZ, as well--they fear cellphones are being used to detonate devices. This could be an issue if anyone is trying to contact a loved one.

There will be increased security precautions in future, I am sure--probably along the lines of "Times Square New Year's Eve" for people who want to see the start and finish of the race.

This is the world we live in.

There is a rumor that the bomber was injured, and is at Brigham/Women's. That's totally unsourced but it's going around. There is also a rumor that a 'Person of Interest' is being questioned. That, too, is unsourced and denied by officials at the scene.

I'm told this is incorrect:

Cell signals in Boston have been disabled to prevent detonations by phones. If you need to find a loved one, use Google's People Finder: http://google.org/personfinder/2013-boston-explosions/

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Police in Los Angeles, New York City, London, Washington and other cities worldwide stepped up security Monday following explosions at the Boston Marathon.

In Los Angeles, the Sheriff's Department activated its emergency operations center and increased patrols at transit hubs, schools and county buildings, while in New York, critical response teams were deployed citywide and officials stepped up security at hotels and other prominent locations.

California emergency management officials activated their statewide threat assessment system, which was established after the Sept. 11, 2001, World Trade Center attacks. And officials in multiple cities and counties throughout the state were reviewing information from federal authorities for possible threats.

Meanwhile, police in Washington, San Diego, Las Vegas, Detroit and Atlanta were monitoring events closely and assessing potential increases in security measures.

They are now saying 3 dead and 114 wounded, some very seriously--ten amputations at least. USN EOD is supporting the operation.

I have family not far from there--I used to live in that vicinity years ago, myself, know it well. It's such a shame. I hope they find who did it and punish them robustly.

Rough night for so many people in Boston. Governor Deval says that Tuesday will not be business as usual as the state mobilizes to find them and take care of everyone. As Obama said, they will find who did this and why. Take care.

The chair of the House Homeland Security Committee told CNN Monday evening that officials have a person of interest in custody in connection with the explosions at the Boston Marathon.

"A person of interest is in custody and is being asked questions," Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX) told the network. "That doesn't mean necessarily that this is the person who did it."

Asked if there was any further information he could provide, McCaul said it "would be irresponsible for me to do so at this point in time."

Foreign-accented guy trying to get into restricted area with a backpack should have been detained, told to hand over backpack for a search.

I know, I know, civil liberties and all but the minute you have people packed into an event, the security should be tight.

Going to the O inauguration twice, you could not get into the secure area without having your bags and backpacks searched. People with passes had fast-track security check areas and those without passes could only access one or two streets to go through security. The wait was ridiculous at those streets but that's the way it was and it worked, security-wise.

The Pakistani Taliban, which claimed the 2010 Times Square bomb plot, on Tuesday denied anything to do with explosions that killed three people and wounded more than 100 in Boston.

"We believe in attacking U.S. and its allies but we are not involved in this attack," Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan told AFP.

"We have no connection to this bombing but we will continue to target them wherever possible," Ehsan added.
