Hail pounds Omaha as severe storms blow through
Source: Omaha World Herald
Update, 8:45 p.m. Tuesday: Hail moved into the Omaha metro area just before 8:30 p.m.
The hailstones covered streets, sidewalks and driveways in parts of Omaha, resembling piled-up snow. Vehicles were dented. Roofs were reportedly damaged. And there were several reports of busted skylights, including in the areas of 144th Street and West Center and 180th and West Center.
Tom Shaw, who lives near 140th Street and West Center, said hail the size of golf balls and smaller fell near his home. Heavy rain followed in the hail's wake, he said, washing the hailstones down the street.
Near 150th Street and Giles Road, hail that was about 1.5 inches in diameter was reported by a trained weather spotter.

The road in the 129th and Ogden Streets area is covered with hailstones. The hail Tuesday was so intense that it completely covered streets in this part of Omaha.

(13,771 posts)Also been through the winter snows and blizzards, not to mention the summer heat, humidity, tornadoes, etc.
Yet I loved living in Omaha. Those were terrific years in a great city.

(7,402 posts)What is so odd is that this severe weather is far behind the actual cold front. It is currently 39 degrees and about 1 minute ago was a really heavy thunder clap. About 90 minutes ago I needed to run something out to my daughters place in SW Omaha and the grass was still white with hail. One stone I picked up was about 7/8 inch and this was 3 1/2 hours after the hail fell. Granted, it wouldn't melt very fast at 39 degrees, even with a steady rain falling the whole while -- but still, that is some serious hail.

I hope everyone in Omaha is ok.

(18,866 posts)We had bad storms here in KC last night. I hate to complain as we really need the moisture.
About 10:00 last night we really had a storm come through - lots of lightening and it just poured. Then it rained and thundered all night. Today is cold and wet and gray.
Yuk. I need sun.

(12,296 posts)... I'm not looking forward to being up all night tonight anticipating downed trees or hail damage to my house. Just not in a position to afford the fallout from Mother Nature's wrath.
