Dem Rep. Schwartz jumps into Pa. governor's race

Source: USA Today

Democratic Rep. Allyson Schwartz launched her bid for Pennsylvania governor on Monday, hoping to challenge Republican Gov. Tom Corbett in 2014.

Schwartz, who is in her fifth term in the U.S. House, is the fourth Democrat to declare for next year's governor's race. A Quinnipiac Poll taken in March showed Corbett was rated unfavorably by 44% of Pennsylvania voters, compared with 39% who gave him good marks.

If she wins the general election, Schwartz would be the first woman governor of Pennsylvania. Schwartz intends to file her paperwork for the governor's race Monday, and transfer $3 million from her congressional campaign account.

"I'm running to be governor, not the 'first woman' governor," Schwartz told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "But the fact that I am the only woman in the congressional delegation and in a senior policymaking role, means people know I can beat the odds."

to be considering running for it again - Marjorie Margoles-Mezvinsky (whose son recently married Chelsea Clinton). What's ironic is that Marjorie popped up out of nowhere on Tweety's show about a month ago and I was really surprised at how she suddenly "appeared" in a television discussion (although she used to be a local tv reporter here), since I hadn't heard hide nor hair from her either before or after her son's wedding. I was thinking that maybe she was thinking of testing the waters again - either for governor or for a Congressional seat - especially since at the time, the rumors were flying about Allyson. Of course now it's obvious that the Clintons have targeted the state and are setting things in motion after getting an AG in... and surely Corbett needs to go. BUT the state Democratic party MUST MUST get the turnout going for this somewhat off-year 2014 election. They can't just assume Philadelphia is going to carry it for them this time and they must link Corbett to the Penn State debacle (along with other shady ALEC crap that he has been trying to implement).

And so there we have it. Alternately, another former occupant of the seat, Joe Hoeffel (who is now a Montco Commissioner), could possibly run if he wanted, although I know that Democrats surely want to keep their 2-1 majority among the commissioners for the county.

It was a shame how she lost her seat in 96 (?). Her connection to the Clintons will be a big boost, and Bill probably still feels bad about her losing her seat to support his budget. I have heard him mention her from time to time when reflecting on his accomplishments.

Edit: I found this link: http://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2013/04/09/former-congresswoman-marjorie-margolies-mezvinsky-considers-run-for-her-oid-seat/

I heard what is at your link on that CBS affiliate news station this morning. One of my sisters lives in that Congressional District (PA 13) and I am on the border of it (in PA 2 with Chaka Fattah). Am hoping for a miracle and even if some other Democrat gets it, I'm hoping that she consider taking on Toomey in 2016. Since that would be a Presidential election year, the turnout should definitely be a bit higher then than other election years.

I remember back in I think '92 when Lynn Yeakel ran for Senator to try to unseat Specter. She almost did it but he had a big machine of crossover votes that pushed him to the win. Now is the time to get a woman Senator here in PA!
