Lawmaker: Iran Could Quit Nuclear Treaty

Source: Associated Press

Iran will keep the option of withdrawing from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty on the table and will seriously consider it if the West intensifies sanctions or refers the case to the U.N. Security Council, a leading lawmaker warned Monday.

Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Iran cannot remain an NPT member while it is punished for exercising its nuclear rights, while offering terms for a deal at the same time — halting high-quality enrichment in exchange for cancellation of punishing Western sanctions.

"It's not acceptable that Iran respects NPT but the U.S. and the West ignore NPT's Article 6 — reducing nuclear weapons — and Article 4 — right to enrichment," Boroujerdi said, according to the state TV's Al-Alam website.

"Therefore, there is no reason for Iran to remain an NPT member under such circumstances," he said.

4. Who's negotiating to disarm India, Pakistan, Israel, and North Korea?

They're not signatories, but article 6 makes it clear that signatories of the treaty should make efforts towards disarmament in general, not just amongst themselves.

A better one is "Iran decries violation of its treaty rights, considers options."

Government come to power? When the Shah was in power, Israel was not Iran's enemy and neither was the United States. I think Iran has the right to build nuclear weapons unless the same pressure is applied to Israel. Israel is the country threatening to attack Iran and so is the United States. The United States should be at fault for letting Israel get nuclear weapons anyway. And don't tell me the United States does not have the means to put sanctions on Israel. I don't think our country has the grounds to judge any country when it comes to nuclear weapons because we were the first to drop them on civilians. And then we threatened to nuke the Chinese. The non proliferation treaty is not worth the paper it is printed on. When our rightwing neocons in Congress get serious about non proliferation, call me. It will be a cold day in hell just like the gun issue.

I know that fact distrubs you and many others, but the fact is the only way for your comment, "I think Iran has the right to build nuclear weapons unless the same pressure is applied to Israel." not to be total bullshit, is if Iran does remove itself from the NPT. I do love how posters try to introduce the same tired red herring time and time again, thinking at some point, it will magically not be a logical fallacy.

6. It works for Israel. I don't hear anybody talking about sanctions on their nuclear program.

7. Why do you and others always play the random "but Israel" card every single time?

I mean come on, instead of making excuses why we shouldnt discourage countries from building nuclear plants and weapons shouldnt we be doing more to discourage countries (including our own) from building said nuclear plants and building more nuclear weapons?

...worst kept secrets and the United States plays along. Seven years ago I wrote a piece on NNPT and India, Israel which explores this more: India and Israel: Nuclear Non-Proliferation myopia and U.S. Foreign Policy

India would do just as fine as an analog but successive conservative Israeli governments get most of the attention because they're such habitual chest-thumping, insecure dickheads.

11. It's their favorite logical fallacy (red herring) when this topic arises.

That said, what the other poster said is absolutely correct. If Iran were to withdraw from the NPT, then they would be on the same level as Israel (North Korea, India, and Pakistan), and continued attempt to prevent the building of nuclear weapons would be a huge double standard. Of course, you will never hear India used as the "I" country when this situation arises.
