Mississippi Officer, suspect killed during police station interview

By Hasani Gittens and Ian Johnston

A police officer and a murder suspect were shot dead as the accused man was being questioned in the police headquarters in Jackson, Miss., on Thursday.

The incident began when cops brought the suspect to the headquarters building downtown Thursday afternoon, Jackson Police Chief Rebecca Coleman said.

“He was being interviewed on the third floor of the police department,” Coleman said. “Later we heard that … shots had been fired and upon our arrival we found the suspect is deceased and we have a police officer that’s deceased."

The shooting happened at about 5:40 p.m. local time (6:40 p.m. ET).
NBC station WLBT reported said the officer who was killed was identified by police as Eric Smith, a homicide detective who was married to a fellow Jackson Police Department officer. They have two children.

enter the station with a gun, or why does a detective enter a interview room with a gun?

when interviewing a suspect, no firearms should be allowed in the interview room period.

I suspect that the policies will be changed because of this tragic incident, although, it's closing the barn door after the horse has been stolen.

It implies with careful wording that they were both murdered, stopping short of calling it a murder/suicide. Am I to assume that was the case?

MBI investigating JPD shooting

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will be investigating Thursday's shooting at the Jackson Police Department that left a JPD detective and a murder suspect dead.

--snip--

Police Chief Rebecca Coleman said the suspect was being interviewed on the third floor of the police department. She said there were reports of gunfire, and an officer and the suspect were found dead.

A former JPD detective says that when he did interrogations, he left his weapon in a lock box outside of the room, but added that procedures have now changed.

He says officers are required to keep their weapons with them now.

No guns once inside the station except for those officers stationed there and not handling suspects and prisoners.
I can't understand the reasons for the change.
