Paramedic who was shot in Oakland dies

Source: SFGATE.com

(04-04) 19:12 PDT OAKLAND -- Quinn Boyer, the Santa Clara County paramedic who was shot while driving in the Oakland Hills Tuesday, died Thursday afternoon at Highland Hospital, officials said.

Police are treating the case as a homicide.

Boyer, 34, was off duty and stopped at an intersection on the 5200 block of Keller Avenue about noon Tuesday when someone in another car got out and opened fire. Boyer tried to flee in his Honda Civic, but jumped the median and plunged into a ravine.

He was pronounced dead at 3:53 p.m. Thursday, police said.

A spokeswoman for Santa Clara County Ambulance, where Boyer worked for the past two years, said a memorial has been set up at the service's facility at 1345 Vander Way in San Jose.

These days if you get cut off or whatever don't even honk your horn or look at them, much less yell or flip the bird.

A college friend of my son visited us. He was devastated by the shooting even though his friend was then still alive. My son also was the victim of a senseless violent act in the Bay area that left him in a wheelchair for two years. Sooner or later we are all touched by this madness.

So many crimes in the bay area go unsolved.

Sad story, I think it happened in the middle of the day.

The Oakland Police Department early Tuesday evening announced the arrest of five teens ranging in age from 14 to 16 for the April 2 shooting of off-duty paramedic Quinn Boyer.

Oakland police Chief Howard Jordan said the crime is part of what he described as "a disturbing trend in this city" in which juveniles as young as 13 have been involved in violent crimes.

"I call on parents, the schools and the community to change the cycle," Jordan said.

Boyer, 34, who had worked as a paramedic for five years, the last two for Santa Clara County Ambulance, was shot while he was driving shortly before noon on April 2 and crashed his car down a ravine in the 5200 block of Keller Avenue. He died two days later.
