Tighter Gun Rules Pass the Maryland Legislature

Sweeping restrictions on gun ownership passed the Maryland General Assembly on Thursday, including a ban on new purchases of assault weapons, a 10-bullet limit on magazines and requirements that handgun buyers undergo fingerprinting and target training.

With President Obamas gun legislation stalled in Congress, Maryland becomes the fourth Democratic-led state to enact restrictions. It follows New York, Colorado and Connecticut, which on Wednesday passed one of the nations toughest laws, 3 1/2 months after the massacre of 26 children and educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School there.
Maryland joins seven other states and the District of Columbia in banning new sales of military-style assault weapons, a measure dropped by Congressional gun control advocates because of fierce opposition.

Under the bill, handgun buyers must pass a background check, submit fingerprints and undergo training in a classroom and on a target range. They would then be issued a license like a state drivers license.

Senate gives final approval to gun bill"
The Senate voted 28-19 Thursday to accept House amendments to the legislation, which also requires gun owners to report lost or stolen firearms to police, empowers state police to audit gun dealers and bars more people with mental illnesses from buying guns.
(This is in a Senate with 33 Democrats and 14 Republicans, so 5 Democrats might have joined the Republicans in voting no.)
