Mick Philpott jailed for life over Derby house fire that left six children dead

Source: The Guardian

Mick Philpott has been jailed for life for being the "driving force" behind a plot to torch a Derby home which led to the deaths of six children, with the trial judge describing him as a disturbingly dangerous man with no moral compass.

Mrs Justice Thirlwall said Philpott, 56, should serve a minimum of 15 years after a jury at Nottingham crown court convicted him on six counts of manslaughter for plotting the fire, which he and two others started in May 2012.

I have been posting about this under True Crime, but since it's the dramatic end of the case against this lot of trash I thought LBN was an appropriate forum. Also, The Derby Telegraph has been following the case from the beginning so if anyone wished to read all of the horrifying details of what these people did and what a complete monster this man is, here is a link to that publication:

British law prevents any media outlet there from reporting anything other than testimony given during the trial, so now that it's over a great deal more has come out, such as Philpott's attempted murder conviction from 35 years ago and the sexual depravity they engaged in with this third defendant and, apparently, total strangers in public places.

This is a man who spent a life time abusing women- including nearly stabbing one to death. Honestly, you're talking oranges and apples.

5. Sad story, but, IMO, this is not "important news of national interest" and it dilutes LBN.

The guy was a shithead and he deserves his fate, but we've got plenty of shitheads over here too. This just isn't the right forum for this story--the UK Group is a better fit.

Post the latest news from reputable mainstream news websites and blogs. Important news of national interest only. No analysis or opinion pieces. No duplicates. News stories must have been published within the last 12 hours. Use the published title of the story as the title of the discussion thread.

Of course, you're not the first to ignore the SOP. You won't be the last, I'm sure.

It's been big news on this side of the Pond.

The op did not ignore the SOP. This was an appropriate posting as it garnered a lot of national interest.

9. I've been in NYC all week and haven't missed a news broadcast--it hasn't made the news here.

Sorry--it's just not "news of national interest." It's a British tragedy.

So no international stories should be posted here? And Great Britain and the U.S. have absolutely NOTHING in common, right? I hardly think it's an inappropriate posting on this forum. It was international news when it happened. I saw it all over the websites of CNN and MSNBC. I should think that parents setting a house fire that resulted in the deaths of six of their own kids is news in every country. This is the country of my husband's birth and my in-laws are British, but even if none of that was the case I still would have followed this one; it's just too horrible to comprehend.

11. This is not a story of "national" import. It's not North Korea coming over the ridge to kill us,

or the Queen giving the Vice President rabies by biting him on his knee--those would be stories of national import.

It's a sad story about British children and their dumbass British father who killed them.

It's not a question of having anything in common. I used to live in UK; it's still not a story of "national" import any more than the current location of Will and Kate (Scotland, FWIW) is.

It's not even a question of you following the story. If the same sort of crime happened in Iran, or France, or Russia, and people who post here with an interest in those nations were following the story, it would still be a terrible thing, but it is just not a story of "national" importance.

This is just not an appropriate story for this forum. Sorry, but IMO, it doesn't fit the SOP. It's horrible, but it's horribly fit for the UK group, True Crime...even GD. But not LBN.
