If there's a problem, shouldn't they put out a tweet saying, "Calling all good-guys with guns! Please come to URI campus to stop a bad-guy with a gun!"

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. — Police are investigating reports of a gunman at the University of Rhode Island.

Steven O’Donnell, head of the Rhode Island State Police, tells The Associated Press on Thursday that there is no evidence of an active shooter.

.

The school in South Kingstown wrote on its Twitter feed late Thursday morning that it was investigating a possible gunman on campus. It told people to seek shelter and stay where they were.

O’Donnell says the gunman was reported at Chafee Hall, which houses several departments including psychology, journalism and economics and some college administration offices.

As of 12:45 pm, the University is still investigating reports of a man with a gun in or around Chafee Hall on the Kingston campus. We have notified the campus community through our emergency alert system, the website, and email to “Secure yourself indoors (not Chafee), stay there, and do not move about outside until further notice.

The University has activated its Emergency Operations Center. All precautions continue to be taken. No injuries have been reported.

Classes have been cancelled on the Kingston campus.

Rhode Island State Police Superintendent Colonel Steven O'Donnell has issued the following statement regarding the report of a shooter on the URI campus within the hour.

"A phone call was made in the last hour from the URI campus reporting an active shooter on campus. URI, South Kingstown Police, and State Police were dispatched to respond to the situation. At this time, we have no further evidence to support the report and are responding to the incident."

The Kingston campus has NOT been cleared. Instructions are still to stay where your are, indoors, until further notice.

This is his Facebook status:

Well, here I am locked in my office at URI, which is on lock-down because of some nutcase with a gun who was last seen downstairs in this building. Seemed like a particularly appropriate time to share this message from the folks at Sandy Hook.

What followed was a graphic from the Sandy Hook Promise Facebook page.

Just got a followup from him wishing me luck in my election this Tuesday, saying they are still locked in offices. His comment was he'd rather enjoy being here to go door-to-door.
