Rutgers owes Ex Coach $100,000 Bonus

Source: Huffington Post, AP

By GEOFF MULVIHILL 04/04/13 10:54 AM ET EDT

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Rutgers University's fired basketball coach is due a $100,000 bonus for lasting through the season.

Mike Rice was dismissed Wednesday after a video was made public of him kicking and shoving players and spewing gay slurs during practices.

He would not be collecting the bonus if he had been fired in December when the university first saw the video and the administration decided only to discipline him.

Rice was paid $622,500 last year under a deal that also included bonuses for winning games and graduating players. His five-year contract called for a $100,000 bonus if he completed the 2012-13 season.

So this is what this guy gets for his actions...$622,500 plus $100,000. Not bad for being a complete asshole......Someone who its his student. Now, I used to teach..and if I hit my students, repeatedly........well, maybe jail... not a bonus..

$100,000 for being fired. Just like they fined him $50,000 and suspended him earlier this season.

you have to abide by the terms of the contract. he made it to the end of the season and didn't get fired for his actions so you have to pay him.

Rice's outspoken demeanor resulted in one of the events for which he is best known, his 1994 ejection from an NBA game while working a radio broadcast.[6] As Rice tells the story:

"At the time, Steve Javie, the official, was a young official. That previous week he had kicked out a mascot, a fan, and kicked somebody else out, a trainer or something like that. He was on a roll that week, he had made a call, and I looked on the monitor and saw it was a bad call on Cliff Robinson. I kind of put my hands like that [two hands waived at the official] and he ran over. Cliff thought he was going to call a technical on him, because Cliff was standing there doing the same thing. He ran by Cliff and that's when he kicked me out of the game — the rest is history."[9]

Rice added that he subsequently wrote an article for Rip City magazine charging Javie with an abuse of power. "I think he...read that and we have not talked since," he noted in a 2009 interview.[9]
