Worker missing; cruise ship breaks from Ala. port

Source: AP-Excite

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - High winds dislodged a disabled cruise ship from its mooring in Mobile, Ala., Wednesday, and crews were searching for a missing shipyard worker whose guard shack was blown into the water by the same strong winds, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Authorities said the Triumph becoming dislodged and the shack blowing into the water were not directly related.

The Carnival Cruise Lines ship Triumph was disabled Feb. 10, by an engine fire that stranded thousands of passengers onboard for days in the Gulf. It was slowly towed into port in Mobile, Ala., and miserable passengers were able to get off.

The National Weather Service reported winds between 35 and 65 mph blowing through the area on Wednesday afternoon.

The Triumph, which has been docked in Alabama since an engine room fire left it disabled for days in the Gulf of Mexico, broke away from its mooring in a Mobile, Ala. shipyard on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. The U.S. Coast Guard tweeted Wednesday afternoon that high winds were likely to blame. (AP Photo/Dave Martin, File)

flying the flag of Liberia or whatever crap registration they have. It seems like cost cutting across the board for profit is the culprit here. If we had half the integrity we did fifty years ago about regulating our maritime traffic in our ports, I don't think Carnival cruises would be allowed to dock.

Fincantieri - Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A. is an Italian shipbuilding company based in Trieste, Italy.
It was formed in 1959 and is the largest shipbuilder in Europe, and one of the largest in the world.
The company has built both commercial and military vessels during its history.

there follows a list of ships it has built and the Carnival ships are on the list.

as to the fire:

Two weeks prior to the engine room fire casualty at sea, the Carnival Triumph experienced propulsion issues that caused it to be five hours late returning to its Galveston home port on January 28, 2013, delayed the ship's departure for its next cruise from 2:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. that night, and resulted in the elimination of a scheduled stop in Cozumel because of the ship's diminished cruising speed.
While in port, a Port State Control (PSC) vessel inspection by the Texas City, Texas, U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit was conducted, resulting in a finding that there was "a short in the high voltage connection box of one of the ships generators causing damage to cables within the connection box", a deficiency under 50AC SOLAS 2009 Ch 1 Reg 11.
.......this deficiency remained unresolved at the time of the subsequent fire and loss of power while at sea on February 10.

Who owns the ports now? I remember back during Bush's administration of some scam to sell the ports to a Middle Eastern country? It seems no one cared so I don't really remember. However???

We had a fairly mild rain all afternoon, then as it cleared there was a very unusual 30 minute bout of strong winds..
those winds usually procede a thunderstorm.
Guess Mobile got hit by the same winds, strong off the Gulf.

There is no way in hell I would go for a cruise on the Triumph. There is not enough money on the planet for me to step foot on that death trap.
