Obama's EU Trade Deal Would Include New Political Powers For Corporations

Source: Huffington Post

WASHINGTON -- The Obama administration is pursuing a free trade agreement with the European Union that would grant corporations new political power to challenge an array of regulations both at home and abroad, according to an administration official involved in the negotiations.

While the plan is still in its early stages, the effort alarms consumer and environmental advocates who worry it will lead to a rollback of important rules and put multinational companies on the same political plain as sovereign nations.

primarily the militantly anti-government right, and secondarily fundamentalist Christians concerned with end-time emergence of the Antichrist. Skeptics, such as Michael Barkun and Chip Berlet, have observed that right-wing populist conspiracy theories about a New World Order have now not only been embraced by many seekers of stigmatized knowledge but have seeped into popular culture...

As a conspiracy theory, the term New World Order or NWO refers to the emergence of a totalitarian one-world government.

The common theme in conspiracy theories about a New World Order is that a secretive power elite with a globalist agenda is conspiring to eventually rule the world through an authoritarian world government—which replaces sovereign nation-states—and an all-encompassing propaganda that ideologizes its establishment as the culmination of history's progress. Significant occurrences in politics and finance are speculated to be orchestrated by an unduly influential cabal operating through many front organizations.

Today the populist right wing base - like the Texas GOP cited below - is still paranoid about the NWO and views the UN as an early form of One World Government. They want the US to withdraw from the UN (and practically every other international organization that limits what they see as the US' 'sovereign' right to do whatever it wants, whenever it wants, to whomever it wants).

the rule of corporate empires over every aspect of our lives rarely receive notice.

Many of us on the left hoisted the Gadsden Flag (appropriately) to protest Bush's invasion of Iraq. No media would report it, though we flew that flag for years. When far fewer TeaPartiers used the Gadsden flag wrongly for their protests the corporate media GAVE it to them as their symbol.

A little discernment goes a long way, pampango.

Yet it is still important to note how the Democratic party's thinking has moved rightward in the last 40 or so years. We must be vigilant and when our party lets us down it is our duty to speak up...

he's from Belgium and a hardcore neoliberal.

He had a press release parroted in our mainstream m€dia about how the deal would liberalize services and government contracts, which was sure to draw fire from "the usual powerful interests" (ignoring the fact he is bought and paid for by VERY powerful special interests).

And then this state-investor resolution process, by which a company can sue a state at some institution like the World Bank over regulation it doesn't like. This is completely nuts. I'm gonna start spreading the word here, this can't pass.
