Sanford wins GOP nomination for his old House seat

Source: AP

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (AP) — Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has cleared another hurdle in his bid for a political comeback, defeating a former county council member to win the GOP nomination for a vacant U.S. House seat.

With 78 percent of precincts reporting, Sanford had about 56 percent of the vote to 44 percent for Curtis Bostic, a former Charleston County Council member. The candidates were vying Tuesday in a GOP runoff in the 1st Congressional District, which covers the south coast.

Sanford will face Elizabeth Colbert (kohl-BURT') Busch and Green Party candidate Eugene Platt in a May special election. She is the sister of political satirist Stephen Colbert (kohl-BEHR').

Sanford's political career was derailed four years ago by his admission of an extramarital affair.

A Green candidate will split the liberal vote--this assclown might end up in the House.

Anyone familiar with the political landscape down that way? I find this story interesting, in a vehicle wreck sort of way....

I guess SC voters figure at least he wasn't caught wearing a diaper or trolling mens' rooms at the airport.

This should be good news for Colbert Busch, if there are any sane voters left in SC.

And I know this because I am one. There will be at least 2 votes in my household that the Argentinian Tail Hiker will have to overcome.

I mean any hypocrite like Sanford should be an absolute embarrassment to their party--by being in the public eye again. Good grief, his 15 minutes are over, gone. Done. See-Ya.

She's engaged to that turdlet--someone should send her a copy, in Spanish so no nuances are missed, of the first Mrs. Sanford's biographical retrospective....!

He definitely goes for a "type"--the mistress looks like his bride did back in 1989:

Republican voters in South Carolina are fucking HYPOCRITES.

They proved it when the state OVERWHELMINGLY went for Newtie Gingrich in the 2012 primaries and they've proved it again here. Looks like these assholes don't hold the same moral standards to themselves that they do other people.

11. Actually, I voted

in the OPEN presidential primary for Newtie. When there is no Democratic primary, my Dem friends here and I always vote in repuke primaries, and the reason is quite frankly sabotage and strategy.

If the state is stupid enough to have open primaries, we vote for the repuke primary candidate who can more easily be defeated by the Democrat in the general election. Specifically in last year's presidential contest, another reason to vote for Newt was to derail, albeit temporarily, Rmoney's train to the nomination. We did not want an early coronation whereby he could sit back with the nomination in hand, plot strategy for the general, rest up and fill the airwaves EARLY with ads against Obama. The longer he had to fight for the nomination, the more the other repukes beat him up, giving POTUS ammunition from his own to use against him later.

I loathe Newt, but it was a blast to vote for him and upset Rmoney's apple cart!

If we could have voted in the SC 1st Congressional District repuke primary, my friends and I would have voted for the liar/cheater/hypocrite Sanford for the same reason: we think Colbert-Busch can more easily defeat him than the other GOP hopeful.

Still, how someone like Sanford can even be taken seriously speaks volumes about this State and the sad state of American politics today. The man not only publicly disgraced himself and his family, he abandoned his job as chief executive to go chase the tail of his Argentinian soul mate! If there had been a statewide emergency (e.g. hurricane requiring an evacuation, nuclear event at the Savannah River plant…), there was literally no one in charge to call the order(s). The state police, the lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state legislature, his family… no one knew where he was or how to contact him. I repeat: NO ONE knew where he was! That is dereliction of duty and he should be discredited for life, but he’s a repuke. The rules are different for them. Imagine if a democratic governor had done likewise?!

BTW, while there are a lot of hypocritical assholes, we're certainly not all assholes here in SC, not by a long shot. Some of us aren't even native but life circumstances -- jobs, marriage, etc -- can put us Blues in congenitally red states!
