Pope to review Vatican bureaucracy, scandal-ridden bank
Source: Reuters
VATICAN CITY, April 2 (Reuters) - Pope Francis, who has said he wants the Catholic Church to be a model of austerity and honesty, could restructure or even close the Vatican's scandal-ridden bank as part of a broad review of its troubled bureaucracy, Vatican sources say.
Francis, who inherited a Church mired in scandals over priests' sexual abuse of children and the leak of confidential documents alleging corruption and infighting in the Vatican's central administration, is mulling his options as he sets the tone for a reformed and humbler Holy See.
One of the tests of his papacy will be what he does about the bank which has regularly damaged the Vatican's image over three decades and faces growing calls for reform.
Last year a European anti-money laundering body found that the bank - formally called the Institute for Works of Religion and known by the Italian acronym IOR - had failed to meet some of its standards on fighting financial crimes.

More good signs out of the Vatican from the new Pope. Francis is most definitely a step in the right direction for Catholics.

(20,867 posts)He has been on the job for just a couple of weeks and he is doing things that were absolutely UNHEARD of up until now, like washing of the feet for all -- not just one white man washing the feet of another *cough* deserving white man.
Now we see he visits an ancient pagan tomb ...
Now we see that he is taking on the Vatican and the banking system that goes with it, an issue I did not expect him to address at such an early stage of his career as the pope. I hope he is able to make some changes, and some drastic ones which are needed.
He rides not in a "Popemobile" and refuses to wear the red shoes nor sit above others in a high chair.
He is human, no different than any which one of us on this planet, that is his lesson I believe, a lesson for all to pay attention too.
I believe he is in good health and I really hope and pray that he sticks around for a long time because even though the changes he is making may seem miniscule to many, they are indeed huge changes.
I wish him the very best and believe that he is trying to make changes to the Church hierarchy and the day-to-day functions of the Church itself, something that no one but the pope can do and no pope has dared to take on such tremendous tasks in my memory which spans about 50+ years with the Catholic Church.
More power to you Pope Francis and may God be with you always.

He had under his cloak a jogging suit and was wearing a very old pair of red Nike's!
