Delhi Gang Rape Accused Demands "Proper Food"

Source: international herald tribune

Vinay Sharma, who along with five others allegedly gang-raped a 23-year-old student in a moving bus in December, filed the plea in a fast-track court where he is being tried, the news agency said.

Sharma sought “proper food and newspapers” inside jail as he wanted to take a written examination for a clerical position with the Indian Air Force, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

Sharma, a 20-year-old gym assistant, said he should be given milk and fruits in jail.

Late last month Sharma asked the court to provide him with a tutor and reading materials to help him prepare for the Indian Air Force clerical recruitment test, local media reported.

Try standing on your rights when they lock you up and see how far you get.
The last time I was in jail, they wouldn't even let my wife bring me my diabetes medications. And I got to eat the standard breakfast-a bologna sandwich, sugar cereal and milk. I got no special dietary consideration-it was take what you get or do without. After I was released and my lawyer got in the act I had rights but until then I had about as many rights as a black person in the antebellum south.

You're original complaint was against the accused's attitude ("What part of jail does he not understand?&quot not the unfair treatment meted out by some jail guards.

BTW - A good friend of mine was in jail for 60 days, and is HIV positive. He showed the doc his prescriptions, got his medicines without a single hitch. Your experience was yours.

Until you get a lawyer to argue it. Having LEGAL rights and being able to exercise them at the time are not the same thing-that is the point I'm making.

That factually and legally false attitude is one of the biggest things wrong with our jails and prisons. So long as people in this country believe as you do, prisoners will be starved, raped, abused, tortured, and treated like subhuman animals.

You are wrong. Prisoners in the American system do in fact have rights. The problem is people who think they shouldn't.

That's not a luxury, it's basic nutrition, which our jails and prisons are supposed to provide. In theory.

In practice, I understand that some toxic and very deadly Authoritarian personalities (as defined conclusively by Altemeyer) could give two shits less. Those are the same personalities that laugh at medication requirements made by prisoners everywhere, and ask "what do you think this is, a health clinic?" Those are the same personalities who have brought war to the world and caused millions of deaths and untold suffering. Those are the personality types we need to coldly and emotionlessly eliminate from the human race. They are beneath contempt, and only deserve for themselves the death and suffering they would gleefully inflict upon the rest of us. That they use the fact these are "only" prisoners provides them a tissue-thin "justification" for their own moral bankruptcy. They think this makes them "right".

I'm proud to be able to say I'm better than that. Can you say the same?

I am a better person, by every possible definition of the word, than those who would deny basic nutrition to prisoners. There isn't any shame in recognizing that some people are simply evil, and there's no shame in recognizing you yourself are not.

A big, big part of the problem with our national consciousness is that very, very bad people at all levels of our society have convinced us that 'being polite' is paramount, strong language isn't necessary, and that all personal positions and opinions are valid and worthy of polite debate, discussion, and consideration. I reject that, because in the end, their goal is to convince us who are their moral and ethical betters to do nothing by way of effective opposition. I'm perfectly willing to call a liar a liar, publicly and to their face (and, preferably, with a large audience), and I'm more than willing to verbally eviscerate them at every opportunity.

This does not make such people happy with me. I wear their displeasure like a very hard-to-obtain Xbox achievement, and give it about as much importance.

Wow. You are awesome for saying that.

Relatedly, there was a recent thread about some departing Obama administration official who is going off to become a lobbyist for Wall Street, or whatever, I forget the particulars at the moment, and someone posted that a commonly-heard expression among investment bankers is, "Integrity is for paupers."

I later thought, "Bernie Madoff's famous last words?"

Because if you are proud to be a "Madoff", you haven't spoken with his children.

My point being, integrity is something to be proud of; crookedness, not.

To give in to the dark side and relish mistreatment of prisoners is not the hallmark of anyone with whom I wish to socialize or or meet. Ever.

And assuming its not the only meal they eat for the day:

Milk or water
1 serving protein
1 serving grain
1 serving fruit or vegetable (condiments do not count)

A peanut butter sandwich with a fruit cup and a drink would do it.

Again, just my opinion...

Opposition to all cruel and unusual punishment is a principle that every liberal should support.

Thus, feeding those who are detained improper food should be the story here that gets people angry.

Instead, the journalist here is essentially suggesting that demanding food which sustains and nourishes the human body is what is outrageous.

And they haven't even had a trial yet.

Sometimes I think, honestly, that we - meaning the world - have regressed back to the Middle Ages when torture was de rigueur for accused and convicted alike. That you read sociopathic ideas even here on DU which is supposedly populated by liberals really turns me off this site some days.

soon you end up with recidivism rates like they have in Norway and then how will the jailers make money. No I think we need to stick to the guilty before trial lock them away forever approach that has help make America te greatest country ever, and if India doesn't like it we have drones.
