CNN)Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on Friday due to complications of metastatic pancreas cancer, the court announced. She was 87.
Ginsburg was appointed in 1993 by President Bill Clinton and in recent years served as the most senior member of the court's liberal wing, consistently delivering progressive votes on the most divisive social issues of the day, including abortion rights, same-sex marriage, voting rights, immigration, health care and affirmative action.

(41,105 posts)NPR..Just days before her death, as her strength waned, Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter Clara Spera: "My most fervent wish is that i I will not be replaced until a new president is installed." She knew what was to come. Ginsburg's death will have profound consequences for the court and the country. Inside the court, not only is the leader of the liberal wing gone, but with the Court about to open a new term, Chief Justice John Roberts no longer holds the controlling vote in closely contested cases.
Though he has a consistently conservative record in most cases, he has split from fellow conservatives in a few important ones, this year casting his vote with liberals, for instance, to at least temporarily protect the so-called Dreamers from deportation by the Trump administration, to uphold a major abortion precedent, and to uphold bans on large church gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic. But with Ginsburg gone, there is no clear court majority for those outcomes.
Upcoming Political Battle: Indeed, a week after the upcoming presidential election, the court is for the third time scheduled to hear a challenge brought by Republicans to the Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare. In 2012 the high court upheld the law by a 5-to-4 vote, with Chief Justice Roberts casting the deciding vote and writing the opinion for the majority. But this time the outcome may well be different. That's because Ginsburg's death gives Republicans the chance to tighten their grip on the court with another Trump appointment that would give conservatives a 6-to-3 majority. And that would mean that even a defection on the right would leave conservatives with enough votes to prevail in the Obamacare case and many others...

(204,856 posts)Just walked into the room in time to hear Rachel Maddow announcing this. What a heart breaker! She was one brave and gallant lady who always stepped up. Just when we thought it couldn't get worse.

(128,540 posts)It's just heart-breaking although not really unexpected. She was really a firebrand who strongly believed in what she was doing and fought all the way despite her travails. :

Onward AND Upward
(122 posts)If you give in to despair and stop fighting you LET them win. I will NEVER let those evil motherfukers steal my life and country without a FIGHT. I am channeling my grief into fighting:
I will honor her legacy by adopting her perseverance. I will fight to the death like Ruth. She didnt give up and neither will I.
STAY IN FIGHT MODE!!! Dont shrink into a hole and give them an easy path. Keep strategizing and looking for the ideas that others will be talking about in coming days.
If Turtle plans a Monday ram through...EVERYONE who can, needs to descend on DC and protest like their life depends on it!
Vulnerable Senators To Target
-Murkowski has already said she wont vote on a judge until after the election. (She is warning Turtle)
-We need to remind Collins of her vulnerability, by adding to her opponent's fund that was started when she voted for Kavenaugh.
-We may be able to get Romney to go along with Murkowski.
Chris Hayes talked about this and now Rachel has Hillary on and she is also bringing these points up and asking us to fight like hell!

(15,340 posts)Lets say they wait until after the election and they lose big. Theyll just nominate someone on November 4th. They are there until January.
Onward AND Upward
(122 posts)That's only possible if we Dems maintain our determination to keep up the fight.
There are also enough senators up for re-election that may agree to let the next president choose. Any number of surprises could happen.
Give up = they win easily by default
Stay determined = it's possible to turn the tide
Right now, focus on replacing despair with determination. It's the least you can do to thank this courageous, iconic, woman who just put herself through HELL, staying alive and on the job, in an attempt to better our lives.
RBG would not have let this scenario stop her. She would have tried to create a solution. If the front door was slammed in her face, she would have found an unlocked window.
