Trump Says 'Herd Mentality' Will Save Us All From COVID
Source: The Daily Beast
Undeterred by mounting criticism over his repeated dismissals of the severity of the coronavirus pandemic, President Donald Trump doubled down on his claim that the virus will go away on Tuesday. Even if it doesnt, he said, herd mentality will take over and save us all. The president made the remarks during a 90-minute town hall event hosted by ABC News late Tuesday in which he repeated many of the same rosy predictions that have previously been proven wrong. Apparently conflating herd mentality with herd immunitywhich occurs when a large enough proportion of the population has built up immunity to an infectious disease, often through vaccinationthe president insisted the country will recover from the pandemic even without a vaccine.
It would go away without the vaccine
but its going to go away a lot faster with it, Trump said, adding that with time, it goes away. And many deaths, ABCs George Stephanopoulos noted. The president continued on as if he had not heard the remark, explaining that youll develop like a herd mentality. Its going to be herd-developed, and thats going to happen, that will all happen
. But I really believe were rounding the corner. When Stephanopoulos reminded him that even one of the lead members of the White Houses own coronavirus task force, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has disagreed with that assessment, Trump said: But you know a lot of people do agree with me.

(9,123 posts)Herd mentality, mob mentality and pack mentality, also lesser known as gang mentality, describes how people can be influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors on a largely emotional, rather than rational, basis. When individuals are affected by mob mentality, they may make different decisions than they would have individually.
Kinda says it all.

Edit: My fake quote would've at least resulted in an accurate statement from him, accidentally by replacing immunity with mentality.

Hey, lets look at herd mentality this way if you have a huge group of people of sub-par intelligence, and you add a few highly intelligent people to the large group, do you think the group will become smarter? No.
With the herd mentality, the intelligence level of the group does not change when a different form of stimulus joins. Its usually the opposite. Most of the time, if intelligent people decide to join such a group, their higher intelligence is dormant to the group, or rather ignored.

(2,227 posts)Her investigation of how it would work, per the statistics, was that "herd immunity" would be achieved when 65% of the population had it. That would include everyone, from asymptomatic to dying. The statistical death rate of those who get infected is from 1% to 5%. Using the lower 1% fatality, would result in over 2,000,000 deaths.
THAT is how they should be explaining it. NO ONE would find those numbers of deaths acceptable, just so businesses could open back up.

(11,882 posts)Because he depends on their ignorance to con them , and to ignore the truth, and believe his disinformation , and BS and constant propaganda instead. Trump is intentionally killing Americans by spreading disinformation , holding rally's, and further spreading this virus, and hurting the economy also. He's admitted he knows what he's doing, and his intent. This is criminal, and what happens when someone thinks they are above the rule of law, and with republicans allowing this to happen. Vote people.
