Golden State Killer Joseph DeAngelo sentenced to life in prison

Source: CNN

(CNN)A former California police officer who became known as the notorious Golden State Killer said he was "truly sorry" before he was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole on Friday.

Joseph DeAngelo, 74, who confessed to 13 murders and dozens of rapes, terrorized the victims in the 1970s and '80s.
"When a person commits monstrous acts they need to be locked away where they could never harm another innocent person," Sacramento Superior Court Judge Michael Bowman said.

Before sentencing, DeAngelo, in orange prison scrubs and a white shirt, rose from his wheelchair and removed a white face mask. He told relatives of his victims, many seated in the vast room: "I've listened to all your statements, each one of them and I am truly sorry to everyone I hurt."

and after attacking them. He put a lot of time and energy into being the essence of pure evil. I hope he lives in fear for the rest of his time on Earth. He deserves far, far worse.

... usually pleading out will get the death penalty off the table.

And even though I'm not a fan of the death penalty, or of plea-bargaining being used to strong-arm people into confessing if they're innocent because they're likely to be falsely convicted and given more time... he was clearly guilty, and chose to save the taxpayers the money involved in a trial. The state got what they wanted -- it really does often cost more to fight a death penalty appeal than it costs to take care of a prisoner, especially one his age.

No, his apology didn't get him anything or mean anything, but at least they know the person who killed their loved ones will be in prison for life , even if it may seem too little too late. Better late than never....

That "sorry" out of him is about as phoney as a three-dollar bill.

He committed 50 rapes of mostly young teenage women over a short period of time in a small geographic location. He then proceeded to murdering his victims. He's truly one of America's worse violent criminals. Worse than Charles Manson. Much worse.

He was "successful" largely because of how our culture thought about rape at the time.
