With key benefits from the CARES Act having already expired and lawmakers unable to agree on a new coronavirus relief package, President Trump on Friday doubled down on his intention to pursue executive orders to prop up the ailing American economy if lawmakers cant reach a deal.
If Democrats continue to hold this critical relief hostage, I will act under my authority as President to get Americans the relief they need, Trump said during a press briefing.
Trump laid out a plan to use executive orders to extend enhanced unemployment benefits through the end of the year (though he declined to say at what level those benefits would be extended), defer student loan payments and forgive interest until further notice (a policy that will likely apply only to federal loans) and extend an eviction moratorium for certain renters.
Negotiations on Friday reached what could be a permanent impasse after a self-imposed deadline came and went without an agreement or any significant progress; White House chief of staff Mark Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that they would recommend Trump move ahead with executive action after Fridays unsuccessful meeting.

(19,131 posts)when you're a dictator you can do anything you like, and with Congressional republicans and Bill Barr agreeing with him at every turn, who's going to stop him?
It's going to take Joe Biden his entire first term to fix the government Trump has destroyed. What a fucking asshole. I hate him on a sub-atomic level.

(11,513 posts)He's going to attempt to claim that Democratic leadership refused to work with him etc. etc. and make it look like he's coming to the rescue.
And where the hell does he think he can spend federal money via executive order anyway? Of course if anyone tries to rein him in he'll claim they're trying to hurt Americans.

And FFS Forbes - this bullshit that you wrote -
Its not clear what power the president has to order federal spending without explicit approval from Congress. When asked if he was concerned about the potential legality of the planned executive orders, Trump replied, no, not at all. You always get sued.
WTF Forbes? It IS fucking CLEAR.
Antideficiency Act
This act prohibits federal agencies from obligations or expending federal funds in advance or in excess of an appropriation, and from accepting voluntary services.
The Antideficiency Act prohibits federal employees from
making or authorizing an expenditure from, or creating or authorizing an obligation under, any appropriation or fund in excess of the amount available in the appropriation or fund unless authorized by law. 31 U.S.C. § 1341(a)(1)(A).
involving the government in any obligation to pay money before funds have been appropriated for that purpose, unless otherwise allowed by law. 31 U.S.C. § 1341(a)(1)(B).
accepting voluntary services for the United States, or employing personal services not authorized by law, except in cases of emergency involving the safety of human life or the protection of property. 31 U.S.C. § 1342.
making obligations or expenditures in excess of an apportionment or reapportionment, or in excess of the amount permitted by agency regulations. 31 U.S.C. § 1517(a).
Federal employees who violate the Antideficiency Act are subject to two types of sanctions: administrative and penal. Employees may be subject to appropriate administrative discipline including, when circumstances warrant, suspension from duty without pay or removal from office. In addition, employees may also be subject to fines, imprisonment, or both.

Now if the deadline for expending the funds runs out, CONGRESS has to extend it and if the money runs out before a deadline, CONGRESS has to authorize more funds. And unless some heretofore obscure provision was written in that stimulus bill allowing for the Executive to do extensions, then they CAN'T (which is why all the drama going on with Congress at the moment to extend it and for how long and for what amount).

(128,356 posts)and Forbes is supposedly a "trusted" source for business news and what their "staff" writes reflects on the organization. She is not an "opinion columnist". She is listed as reporting on "breaking news". This type of enabling crap is what has helped to get us to this catastrophic point in history.
She is in that same age group that won't look up from their phones come hell or high water, even if a big hole appeared in the sidewalk in front of them and they fall in.
