Trump says he will ban TikTok from operating in the US
Source: The Hill
President Trump on Friday said he plans to ban the social media platform TikTok from operating in the United States.
As far as TikTok is concerned, were banning them from the United States, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.
The president said he could use emergency economic powers or an executive order to officially bar the Chinese-owned company from the U.S. He signaled he was not supportive of allowing an American company to acquire TikTok.

Another thing: with the tech billionaires testifying on Capitol Hill this week (and Bill Gates's old company trying to buy Tiktok), it was killing Trump for them to be in the spotlight, and he wanted it to shine on himself instead.
I'm so looking forward to the day when we can go a whole day without hearing his odious name.

(839 posts)the ban is already affecting millions of users across India, who are unable to use the blacklisted apps.
"As China has shown, governments can indeed block apps - not just remove them from the app stores, which has already happened in India, so you can't install them afresh or upgrade an existing install," says tech policy expert Prasanto K Roy.
He adds that although there are ways to get around the ban, it will "effectively kill" popular apps.
"If over 95% of 100 million users exit, that kills the 'network effect' and most of the content, and hence an app like TikTok is no longer attractive."

(7,263 posts)By design the internet infrastructure is a hard beast to kill.
It was created to provide a secure, continuous, non-centralized communication path in case of Nuclear War.
I guess you could take some measure of control over the mainstream WWW, by compromising the Root DNS servers, but that won't stop the Dark Web or some older legacy protocols. Harder to use, but there are ways.
Besides, TikTok makes too much money...I think that perhaps this is a gesture to his asshat protege Zuckerburg more then anything else.

(839 posts)put a region lock on the apps in apple store (they've already move their production to india, they would not be able to make iphone in china anymore due to TSMC will not sell 5nm ics to china anymore), so im sure apple is on board.
i'm sure google play can do the same
now, that is not a 100% ban, people who really want to, can probably download apk and install it on their phone.
but once the tiktok server are off line in america, i believe the only way to get around is to download the Chinese version of tiktok which is douyin and connect to the server back in china.
or some hacker can probably run a emulation private server to get it to work.
avg kids dont have time for that... when vine died, kids moved to tiktok.... so i believe they will just use some other clones
it was a pain in the butt for me to download a japanese region app, i had to have a japanese playstore account and change my phone to the asia region. then go back to english. then when there is an update, i have to repeat the process (if you do not have vpn)

telegram is a different type of app that is harder to kill...like PGP, the government will never be able to ban that form of communication
tiktok have more moving parts to make it work, so it is easier to block some elements and disrupt regular users. people love tiktok because of how easy it is to use.

(1,568 posts)Are there any other similar cases of the US banning citizens from using an app? How would that even work in practice? Force service providers to block? Force device manufacturers to ban it? That seems very China-like. Even if they did that, people will just by-pass any technology blocks if they really really want to.

(839 posts)how hard is it to get around the ban.
how easy is it to use an alternative.

There are many reasons to not use TikTok, as it eats personal information and comes out of an brutally oppressive regimen but to me, making happy little videos about ones cat or horse isnt one of them. In fact, those kind of things are what make the app enjoyable.

Teens, TikTok Users and K-Pop Fans Might Have Tricked Trump Into Expecting a Huge Turnout for His Widely-Hyped Tulsa Rally
Weve never had an empty seat, and we certainly wont in Oklahoma, said Trump.
But ultimately, the turnout did not stand up to the campaigns expectations. The outdoor events did not materialize, presumably as it became clear that there werent even enough supporters to fill all of the empty seats in the arena, let alone a sizable overflowing crowd. A Tulsa Fire Department spokesperson told Forbes that only 6,200 people attended the rally less than half the venues 19,200 seating capacity.
So, pouty mouth as to have his temper tantrum ...

(707 posts)Whether a ban would even work is debatable. What people need to realize is until recently it had the capability to seriously compromise your data specifically your clipboard on iOS devices. Access to this data is whereby you have the device store your login data for websites and apps.
Already most large companies and DOD have forbade its installation by employees. It comes off as a cute way to share short videos but what it actually does is harvest data from the user. Notice it is forbidden in its country of origin for reasons more than videos.
In a previous life I was an Intelligence Specialist for the Navy with an old ass degree in Computer Science. I can only imagine the warnings are from dedicated people that really do care about security.

(1,685 posts)In what way are so-called clouds secure?
DVRacer
(707 posts)I cut my teeth on Token Ring in the 80s lol.
My guess is it involves encryption on both ends that is multi layered. Cloud based is just a fancy way of saying its on a server somewhere else and using TCP/IP to retrieve it. Google and others spent time and money building server farms with mega data storage capability.
Funny thing our nukes are still using 8 floppy disks from the 70s on systems that have no connectivity with other computers because it cannot be hacked. DOD is actively testing cloud use for some data it hasnt gone as well as hoped. White Hat hackers have exposed many open ports that allowed access. In short nothing is truly safe if connected nor if rouge data like a thumb drive is introduced.
This may help

(1,685 posts)That is exactly what I thought. In short, nothing is truly secure unless a computer simply is not connected to other computers.

I did pull out an old install of token ring a long time ago, though. Anyway, aren't they just now finally getting around to replacing those old floppies with zip disks the nuclear silos? I'm kidding about the zip disks, but I do recall reading they are upgrading to use USB sticks or something.
