McConnell signal to Republican Senate candidates: Distance from Trump if necessary

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN)Sen. Mitch McConnell is allowing Republican Senate candidates to do whatever it takes to salvage their campaigns ahead of what Republicans increasingly fear could be a devastating election for their party.

In recent weeks, the Senate majority leader has become so concerned over Republicans losing control of the Senate that he has signaled to vulnerable GOP senators in tough races that they could distance themselves from the President if they feel it is necessary, according to multiple senior Republicans including a source close to McConnell.

That could mean breaking with Trump on the administration's response to the coronavirus pandemic and the continued efforts by the President to paint an optimistic picture despite rising cases and deaths across parts of the country, especially in many Republican states in the South and Midwest.

While this may give some senators the flexibility to draw a distinction between themselves and the President, it also forces them to walk a tightrope. Trump remains enormously popular with the Republican base, and any attempts to undercut him risks alienating those voters.

Every republican running should have his image paired with an image of Trump saying "I take no responsibility at all."

But from their perspective they have so far exhibited a pathological aversion to being the subject of a mean tweet from Trump. I think Trump attacking other Republicans would be an enjoyable spectacle.

26. Yes! What the Hell is wrong with our party?

Why can't the ads get aggressive? Hillary's ads were all about what a bad person he was, but very little about policy.

We need the senate to fix this country and to rescue it from being viewed as a global joke.

McConnell is telling Democrats how to win - remind all voters of the republican ring kissing. Pictures of all the intimacy while narrations describe what a crap show his policies have produced - graphics of the death and suffering the republicans and Trump have caused and are on track to cause. At this rate, there will be a quarter million dead Americans prior to election day. Narratives reminding of a quarter million dead won't affect voting? You can bet that if Obama had a quarter million dead Americans during his watch that the republicans would be screaming so loud you'd hear it from outer space.

41. Take time to read the body of the post not just the subject, thank you.

The ads Hillary ran here in Arizona were not effective. The ones Mark Kelly's campaign are running are effective - policy, McSally's record of voting against Obama's healthcare protections, etc. Biden's ads should be more aggressive than they have been. Biden's recent corona virus ad starts with an animated graph, which as the arrow starts rising, audio of Trump saying how he's done such a great job - the title of the graph indicates a corona virus infections. At first my wife grabbed the remote to change it, because it looked like a Trump ad to both of us. We had to figure out throughout the commercial that it was a Biden ad, which was confirmed at the end. Trump has wrecked this country and has committed so many crimes that it is disappointing and scary that ads are not pounding the crap out of Trump. Every time Republicans win the presidency they run bold aggressive ads. Democrats seem to have been playing prevent defense for decades. The SCOTUS should be loaded with liberals in my opinion. The SCOTUS conservatives are shameless sociopaths.

20. They cannot walk that tight rope

A normal politician would see that they are dragging some other people down and let them distance themselves to improve their electoral chances. Trump won't allow those in trouble to do it. The instant they try they will be on the bad end of a tweet that will get the base fired up against them. Trump's ego will not allow them to separate from him.

When Trump gets wind of it, he will turn on you and unleash a torrent of tweets and bullshit that will consume your sorry asses. Youíve all been loyal to him, but he WILL NOT be loyal to you! He will preach to his minions to either vote 3rd party or not to vote at all.

Either way, it sucks to be you! 😂

28. Even if they try to distance the stink of MF44 is on them.

They have enabled him the last 3 1/2 years. Taking the weekend off without voting on extending unemployment benefits should be The thing that also destroys them.

They donít care about working Americans only their rich corporate donors and The Democratic Party needs to pound this everyday into their talking pints. And the tax cuts for the rich are the reason we have the Large deficit When they complain about spending when the Democrats get back the senate and white house.

for them. If they break with or criticize Trump, they'll alienate those voters. At this point, I doubt that anyone planning to vote for a Dem candidate is going to believe these Rs have had a sudden change of heart. They'll see it for what it is, a strategy to get re-elected, then revert to form if they are.

38. Imo, give it 5 years, and only 20% of people will have voted for Trump in 2016.

You know, just like how only 20% of people acknowledge they were for the Iraq War. I hope the stain of Trump support is attached to these people forever, no matter how much they try to rewrite history. They supported a traitor who is trying to destroy our Democracy and turn his family into the royal family. Trump didnít act alone!

Isn't that just so darling? King Mitch decrees it is A-OK to pretend like they don't really have their noses so far buried up shitgibbon's ass that it would take a jaws of life to extract them. No, shitgibbon is their problem, all of them. He needs to be portrayed as the solid steel albatross around their necks that he really is.
