30-year-old dies after attending 'COVID party' thinking virus was a 'hoax'
Source: ABC News
"I think I made a mistake. I thought this was a hoax, but it's not."
Those were the final words of a 30-year-old patient who died at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, this week after attending a so-called "COVID party," according to the hospital's chief medical officer.
Dr. Jane Appleby, chief medical officer for Methodist Hospital and Methodist Childrens Hospital, said in a recorded statement that the unidentified patient told nurses about the party, which she said is hosted by someone diagnosed with coronavirus.
"The thought is people get together to see if the virus is real and if anyone gets infected," Appleby said.

(10,494 posts)The billionaire donors and corporate titans bought and paid for their politicians and used their ad dollars to get the MSM to manipulate the masses. Billionaires such as Rupert Murdock have been spreading their propaganda to create this cult that the Republicans need to stay in office despite losing their white majority in this country. They have created a system of control that keeps them from paying taxes and keeping almost all of the created wealth. They are rarely, if ever audited or investigated, much less prosecuted.
We can attack the symptoms, or we can do something about the root causes of campaign finance and media propaganda. The Republican Party is merely their tool to accomplish what they want. TPTB can rely on the desire for money and power these politicians have to use them to do their bidding. Now they have created the monster that is Trump. You can bet that they will finish getting what they can before Trump goes down. Their judges will block most of what we do once in power.

(22,056 posts)DU poster said, the Darwin award should be awarded to the stupidest CV death, this is got to be one of them). 30 years old and stupid enough to fall for this idiocy. Those putting others in harms' way (by having the party) should suffer some retribution, e.g., the parents of the 30 year should sue those who held the CV party.
Also, a teenager has died after attending a CV party at a church...the church denies it but I kinda of serious wonder and suspect that they are lying...
-snip-
Brunton Davis' statement noted that the teen was actively involved in Youth Church at First Assembly of God, a Fort Myers church that hosted the June 10 event. Davis' death has drawn national attention amid allegations that the church function was a so-called "COVID party," where partygoers compete to see who can catch the virus. First Assembly of God refuted that claim on Tuesday, saying the reports are "absolutely false and defamatory."
"Over the past 24 hours First Assembly of God of Fort Myers has been accused of hosting 'COVID-19 parties.' Nothing could be farther from the truth," the church said in a statement. "First Assembly of God of Fort Myers is following all of the health protections and protocols recommended by the state and local government with regard to holding its church services."

(10,889 posts)... The directive from the White House management office was laid out in a memo to staffers Monday afternoon, NBC reported. ... The memo also asked staff members to avoid visiting the West Wing, where the Oval Office is located, unless it is necessary, the sources told NBC.
So if Covid is a hoax, or if only wimps wear masks, or if masks are ineffective, or yada, then why are Trump's aides required to wear masks?

(7,402 posts)And that applies especially to political speech. Misinformation as a policy just can't be tolerated because it has consequences. In this case the consequence was fatal.
Reagan ended the Fairness Doctrine and something like that needs to be brought back. Also, the FCC has rules that apply to the airwaves. Their rules need to be expanded to include all of the modern methods of communications such as cable and social network/internet news services. Regulation is not the enemy of the people. Lack of proper regulation and rulings such as Citizens United are the enemy of the people because they are almost wholly responsible for the misinformation plague we face today.

(7,402 posts)Besides, you can't shout "fire" in a crowded theatre so there are obvious exceptions, plus it is criminal perjury in many settings already. Lastly, it is not the speech but the amplification of the speech that regulation addresses.

(7,402 posts)While all politicians spin/deflect on issues, Trump just outright lies. That is what must stop but that may even take a Constitutional Amendment as the honor system has broken down. It won't be easy because McConnell has been in cahoots with Trump from the beginning. Then there is Rand Paul too...

(14,557 posts)While this guy does get the proverbial 'Darwin award,' we've got to beef up our education system so most Americans are a bit less gullible than this fellow. I say this because the three county commissioners in my county have waived the county health order to keep wearing masks - they voted to have the county attorney do a formal declaration that they have chosen not to abide by the guideline.
So there you have it - WAY too much ideology, not enough common sense.

(101,262 posts)Until now, it would have been unthinkable for many people to be dismissing a serious pandemic as a "hoax". But since the US president has spent years dismissing anything that shows him in a bad light as a "hoax", his dumber supporters decide they must believe him, and treat something deadly as literally a hoax. And so they risk their lives to "own the libs". This man was stupid, but he didn't deserve to be killed by trump. Or by a virus.

(6,265 posts)from COVID-19 just shows me how critical thinking skill has been all but lost in the younger generation of trump voter. The proof of the lethality of this virus is right in front of their faces, yet, they go to parties maskless, beaches maskless, las vegas maskless, night clubs maskless, gyms maskless and all because of d. trump telling them COVID-19 was/is a "hoax". They have the choice to research, yet many don't. Why? Like lemmings they are following their leader's edict to run off the clifftop. And their fuhrer is nowhere near that cliff.

(10,162 posts)Don't get me wrong. I have lost count of how many times I have seen a loud- mouthed covid denier, or the old maskless white guy with the MAGA or Veteran's trucker hat on just daring someone to say something, or the mother of kids out breaking all the rules, and wished a horrible death on them for their meanness, ignorance, selfishness, you name it.
But every time I see one of these people realizing how stupid they've been, it really breaks my heart. How could it not?
Except for one person: Rand Paul. I hope he gets it again (and I think he lied about the first time).
