Disney World reopens even as coronavirus cases soar in Florida and across U.S.

Source: NBC News

Disney World parks in Orlando, Florida are open again nearly four months after they shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom reopened Saturday, while Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios will reopen on July 15.

The moves come as Florida continues to rack up near-record numbers of new coronavirus cases.

The state reported 11,433 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, Florida's biggest daily increase since July 3, when 11,458 cases were recorded. Florida's health department reported 435 more hospitalizations — the state's largest single-day increase. The statewide COVID-19 death toll has surpassed 4,100.

This is a good example of corporate greed. Disney is putting profits before human life. Shame on them.

It's a small pandemic, after all!

I think their new motto should be the Republican mantra: "There are more important things than living."

I wonder what kind of turnout there will be?

I don't think they should've reopened either but that's not as bad as opening the whole park.

And when people do start getting the virus from there, expect lawsuits to follow for doing this.

No one is making anyone go there and no one is forcing anyone to work there.

At some point people have to start taking responsibility for the consequences of their behavior.

They have been open for some time now. So has Sea World. Masks for all, distancing stressed, cleaning at a high rate. She works with food--no more open bulk-purchase candy bins (about time!). Limited number of visitors, and the limits aren't being hit anyway. Temperature and symptom checks.

If they have to shut down again, there won't be the 80% pay for full-time staff they got before. (Disney, on the other hand, laid off a large number of people, including at least one of my daughter's house-mates) There have been a lot of lay-offs in the higher levels (supervisors and other back-stage folk) and they are running at minimal staff. So far, it doesn't appear to be causing a wider outbreak (a lot of Florida's cases are Miami-Dade, not Orlando) While I am not saying opening is the best choice, I think they are trying to find a middle road. There is only so much money even a mega corporation can lose (and the film side of the Disney and Universal businesses has been shut down, too, to a great extent).

Thank you for pointing that out. A few other details I'll share:

When the opening decision was made, Central Fl had very little uptick, while everyone was in lock-down. They presented the opening plans to De Santos, and one by one, they were approved.
Most of the infection was in South Florida.

Florida numbers shot up this month. Infection and hospitalization were not being reported for weeks.
Remember De Santos runs this state. Tourism is the #1 industry.

Look at the number of unemployed workers in one city that are affected by at least 3 theme parks closed.
100,000 cast members at Disney World alone.

Disney World property is the size of 2 Manhattans.

MOST workers have NOT received an Unemployment check since March 15. At minimum wage.

Disney gave their supply of food, to local food kitchens for those suffering, when they shut down.

Disney is currently operating at extreme reduced capacity. No official totals yet. Most suspect less than a third.

There are plenty of YouTube videos of people at the park.
Those who blog the parks daily, giving updates in normal conditions went there to verify for a fact people are social distancing.

I seen few Disney or Universal Studio's areas where people cramp together. Most of the cramping is the parking lot going through the screenings. And at Disney Springs which opened in June with shops and restaurants. Most are not Disney owned.

The criteria for Disney theme park opening:
Only guests who had both resort reservations and tickets or annual passes prior were allowed in for the balance of 2020.
Then they had to go through another park reservation system to get into a single park a day. This system is new for crowd control.
At this point most people just re booked for 2021, Disney World's 50th anniversary.
If you feel sick before you leave, don't come. You can cancel or re-book, no fee.
At the screening gate, if you or anyone in your party has a temperature, or is sick, the whole party is not let in. You have a second screening out of the sun.
Masks are essential & on the face. Not under your chin.
No buffets, character meet up, fireworks or parades, shows, pin trading, mobile ordering food, etc.

Families go to Disney. So sometimes they have a group of 6 or more. Makes it look like not social distancing.

They have hand sanitizers before and after you go on rides, free standing hand washing stations everywhere, required mask wearing,
cool down areas to take off your mask, monitored for capacity.

They want you to report anyplace they overlooked, so they can reconfigure it.

They also stated they would not hesitate to shut it down if it was not safe. It is provide property, so they have the right to deny you admission. If you have $$ invested you don't want to lose all of it by not masking up. You sign a waiver (check a box you read req.)
Better chance of people conforming to the rules or be escorted out.

Disney or any theme park, is loaded with world wide germs. Always carry wipes & hand sanitizers.

The reason I know this is we have reservations for next week and we are NOT going.
We're not crazy. Not with 15,299 new cases.
That's how difficult that is. You value life. You don't go. Everything that opens, has to be the responsibility of the guest.

I believe they have to open Disney Vacation Club Villas because of their FL timeshare laws.

Let's see what De Santos does with schools. Good Luck to your daughter Maeve.
