Texas bar owners sue to overturn closures

Source: MSN

A group of bar owners in Texas filed lawsuits Monday in an attempt to overturn Gov. Greg Abbott's (R) order closing their businesses in an effort to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus as cases in the state spike.

The lawsuits filed in Austin, Houston and Galveston allege that Abbott does not have the authority to make such an order and claim it specifically targets bars while other businesses, such as salons and tattoo parlors, are allowed to remain open, The Associated Press reported.

The bar owners reportedly said Abbot should call the legislature into a special session to address the issue.

"Gov. Abbott continues to act like a king," Jared Woodfill, an attorney for the bar owners, told the AP. "Abbott is unilaterally destroying our economy and trampling on our constitutional rights."

in their favor BECAUSE governments already have been granted authority over the control of communicable and infectious diseases. Even a President vast authority to deal with health matters that threaten the safety and security of the nation. From mayors, governors to our POS president, they have been granted the powers and are not just free to make s**t up as they go along.

That is what I call dishonorable behavior.

America seems to have put everything that is capitalistic on top of the heap and it just relentlessly crushes everything else underneath it and being honorable is one of a long list of causalities.

What I mean is that honoring our social agreement and system is important to the system and our health. Dishonorable actions are a bad infection on their own and we can see how it makes the contagion worse.

The federal government and the states must address this pandemic both as a health issue and an economic issue. Close down everything that must be closed down, protect the workers that are essential, and do whatever they need to do to make sure that people can live, such as protecting their homes from foreclosures or evictions, food, and everything else they need. It will put this country in debt so bad it will take years for this country will be able to get back on its feet, but at least we will still have a country. Of course that is just wishful thinking.

is that except for maybe some chain places in malls (indoor or strip), most are small facilities so you don't literally have 50 - 100 jammed in them like a bar/restaurant -

When Abbott was the Texas Attorney General he basically spent his life suing the Obama Administration for among other things...acting like a king.

From his own face in 2013 - "I go into the office in the morning, I sue Barack Obama, and then I go home".
