The leader of a North Carolina group protesting the state’s anti-lockdown measures said he is “willing to kill people” in order to fight back against government restrictions.

Adam Smith, one of the founders of ReOpenNC, said during a Facebook live chat this week that he was willing to resort to violence to push back against restrictions that remain in place in order to fight the spread of the coronavirus. As the News Observer reported, Smith repeatedly said he was prepared to react violently if the government were to push back with force against the protests.

“Are we willing to kill people? Are we willing to lay our lives down? We have to say yes,” Smith said in the 17-minute video, which was taken down after the first reports emerged of his violent threats.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Comments made on social media ahead of tomorrow's ReOpen NC march raised concerns of safety​ and violence.

Adam Smith, the husband of ReOpen NC's co-founder, said reopening NC to protect businesses and constitutional rights are issues some should be willing to kill over.

"We want to pick up arms? Do we want to kill anybody? Of course not, nobody wants to take lives. We don’t want to kill anybody. But are we willing to kill people, are we willing to lay our lives down? Yes. We have to say yes," he said.

Social media has been buzzing about his statement; however, he said his words were taken out of context.

His wife Ashley Smith, co-founder of ReOpen NC, organized protests in five North Carolina locations on Memorial Day, including Raleigh at the Governor's Mansion. She said all protests will be peaceful and does not expect Monday's protest to turn violent. "I doubt very seriously that’s going to happen," she said. "We haven’t seen that, and I of course don’t see that happening."

RALEIGH, N.C. — Adam Smith said he was proud Tuesday of his wife's arrest during the ReopenNC rally in downtown Raleigh.

Ashley Smith is one of the organizers of the movement, which is demanding that Gov. Roy Cooper lift his stay-at-home order, arguing that economic damage from the shutdown is worse than the danger to health from the coronavirus.

Smith, told WRAL News that his wife intentionally ignored the orders of police not to step on the sidewalk, saying she wanted to demonstrate civil disobedience.

"She turned to me and said, 'Hey we’re going to show what civil disobedience is all about,'" Adam Smith said. "I think it's the best thing that's ever happened to this movement. This could be that step like that shot heard round the world. This is going to be the step that’s heard around North Carolina. I hope that it inspires people to step up and take that step into the unknown and be willing to stand up for your rights.”
