Linda Tripp, whose tapes were pivotal in Clinton impeachment scandal, dies

Source: CNN - Breaking News

Linda Tripp, who secretly recorded her conversations with Monica Lewinsky about the then-intern's relationship with former President Bill Clinton, has died, according to her mother, Inge Carotenuto, and her former attorney, Joseph Murtha.

Tripp had previously been treated for breast cancer.

Tripp, a friend of Lewinsky's at the time, turned the 20 hours of tapes over to special prosecutor Kenneth Starr. The scandal ultimately led to Clinton's impeachment for perjury and obstruction of justice, though he was ultimately acquitted in the Senate.

Tripp Indicted on Charges of Wiretapping
By Saundra Torry and Raja Mishra
Washington Post Staff Writers
Saturday, July 31, 1999; Page A1

Linda R. Tripp, whose secret telephone tapes of Monica S. Lewinsky titillated and dismayed the nation and ultimately led to President Clinton's impeachment, was indicted yesterday in Maryland on criminal charges of illegal wiretapping.

After a 13-month investigation, Tripp, 49, who lives in Columbia, was indicted on two counts of violating a rarely used Maryland law that makes it a crime to record telephone conversations without the consent of all parties. Tripp has said she recorded more than two dozen phone conversations with Lewinsky in 1997. She also has said she had been warned during that period that secret taping in Maryland was illegal.

snip===================================================================

With yesterday's indictment, Tripp became the only one among the central figures in the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal to be criminally charged. Clinton was impeached but acquitted by the Senate, and Lewinsky received an unusually broad grant of immunity from independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr.

I can't say that i was a fan of hers in any way, shape, or form, but her poor judgement and shifty tactics probably meant that she did not live the latter part of her life very happily. I'm not going to go so far as to say that i felt sorry for her, but I do generally like people to be happy, and I don't see how she could have been.

...On the final day of the Clinton presidency in 2001, Ms. Tripp was fired from her job at the Pentagon. She sued the government for violating her privacy and reached a settlement of $595,000 in 2003.

My former in-laws had a large property in Virginia, after they died and it went on the market, their realtor said Tripp was interested. The family, life long Dems replied "We'd prefer not to pursue that."

To me, Linda Tripp is someone who was so angry at the Clintons for letting her go that she wanted to get back at them. So, she dragged her friend Monica Lewinsky into a situation that was extremely stressful for Ms. Lewsinky. Linda Tripp did not care how much grief Ms. Lewinsky suffered as long as she was able to get back at the Clintons. So, I do not think highly of her.
