Russia's only carrier, damaged in shipyard accident, now on fire

Source: Ars Technica

The Admiral Kuznetsov, Russia's only aircraft carrier, caught fire today during repairs in Murmansk. While officials of the shipyard said that no shipyard workers were injured, Russia's TASS news service reports that at least 12 people (likely Kuznetsov sailors) were injured, some critically. In addition, three people, possibly including the third-rank captain in charge of the ship's repairs, are unaccounted for.

The Kuznetsov has had a long string of bad luck, experiencing fires at sea, oil spills, and landing deck accidents—including a snapped arresting wire that caused a landing Sukhoi Su-33 fighter to roll off the end of the deck and into the ocean. Its boilers belched black smoke during the ship's transit to Syria in 2016, and it had to be towed back home after breaking down during its return in 2017. Then last year, as it was undergoing repairs in a floating drydock in Murmansk's Shipyard 82, the drydock sank and a crane on the drydock slammed into the Kuznetsov, leaving a gash in the ship's hull. It looked like completion of repairs might be put off indefinitely because repair of the drydock would take over a year, and the budget for repairs had been slashed.

The fire was caused when sparks from welding work near one of the ship's electrical distribution compartments set a cable on fire. The fire spread through the wiring throughout compartments of the lower deck of the ship, eventually involving 120 square meters (1,300 square feet) of the ship's spaces.

In total, 12 victims were delivered to hospitals, 10 of them were saved during the fire. One is assessed as serious, and one suffered a head injury. Most received poisoning from combustion products, according to a report from TASS.

It looks like Putin lost his only Aircraft Carrier, and it will be out of commision for some time.

Maybe Donny can loan him a few?

On the flip side, this may put a damper on Russia's global military aggression.

...they have two modern Carriers planned. One for the Pacific and one for Atlantic operations. And they are a long way off before being hitting the sea. With that said, they don't plan to project power much, just in their immediate sphere...flip side, they are investing heavily into smaller ships with long range missiles...it only takes one missile to take down a Carrier.

it isn't easy to hit one, much less sink one with conventional weapons, they are heavily defended and have back up systems for the back up systems.

People seem to believe that taking out a Carrier is easy peasy, I can say with confidence that it ain't an easy task, a Carrier can take multiple hits and still be operational and the crews are well trained to quickly repair damage and get it back in the fight.

Don't underestimate the survivability of our Carriers.

And as far as one missile taking down a Carrier, unless it's a nuke, it will take several missile strikes to put one out of action.

Any war with Russia or China won't be conventional...they will nuke the Carrier and its group. Add to that, the S-400 is rumored to target and take down our stealth aircraft. Then we have S-500 which is going to be deployed next year. Virtually no country on this earth can take down a US Carrier....but if China and Russia can shoot a moth out of the sky, they can shoot an Aircraft Carrier out of the Sea. And yes, it will be nuclear, that's the deterant they are relying on...both Russia and China develop their armed forces for one, hostile attack from abroad and; two; invasion of a neighbor and/or province that turns hostile.

Quality is not their strong suit. Lots and lots of simple, not terribly imaginative equipment. Some is quite serviceable. Much is just garbage we wouldn't imagine dumping on our folks in uniform.

I would not put it past Trump to do something like that. Or, at least try.
