Doug Ford is Ontario's next premier

Source: Toronto Star

The province of Ontario is now a Ford nation.

Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford capped an improbable rise to power Thursday, winning the Ontario election with a majority government and banishing Kathleen Wynne’s Liberals into political oblivion after almost 15 years in office.

“This is incredible. My friends, this victory belongs to you. Tonight the people of Ontario have spoken. You have come together around one common vision of Ontario,” Ford, 53, told cheering supporters in Etobicoke.

“We will work every single day for a better Ontario,” said the rookie leader, who only took the helm on March 10 after the resignation of Patrick Brown.

Inexplicable that Canadians would do this in any form seeing how well "right-wing populism" is working in the US.

about anal sex and hammered that word as a spike into the public's collective mind during the conservative nomination race just before the election took place. Worked like a charm with immigrants and seniors. It would have been too cynical to use during the election.

and that's the first picture that popped into my mind. The obese, cocaine snorting, wine, women, and song moron that was such an embarrassment for Canadians.

For some reason, they love/d both of them and their antics. Enough to elect Rob as their mayor

Rob Ford was a powerhouse in Toronto for years until his death
Even a video of him doing crack didn't completely derail him. Why should it. The calls to police from his wife for domestic abuse barely scratched him
The PCs probably got a large chunk of the vote in Toronto. There is also a sizable number of cranks in Ontario as well

Even the video didn't seem to destroy Doug's brother
Had Rob not died, he probably would also have run and won a seat
Even the reports of how badly he treated his brother's widow didn't stop Doug
Lot of areas (large ones) in Ontario full of crazies

is this Redneck provincialism? How did the cities and suburbs vote break? Conservatives take Toronto? Always sort of a wide open town, no? And how does that mesh with Conservatism, or is there no remaining element of prudishism in conservatives today? Probably rudish questions, but I'm just not understanding.

but, as a city councillor, he did respond to his constituents. He would speak with them personally....and follow up to make sure their complaints had been heard. The man was a trainwreck, but he did work hard for his constituency.

I lived in Toronto for four years - I'm not surprised Doug Ford won. I'm not happy about it. I thought Andrea Howarth and the NDP would squeak in...Kathleen Wynne is incredibly unpopular. I knew the Liberals didn't stand a chance. I'm pretty sure the PCs weren't elected because everyone loves Doug Ford...it is more or less because they hate Kathleen Wynne.

Next year's Federal election is the big one. I tend to vote NDP BUT I will vote strategically (Liberals) if necessary to keep the PCs and Andrew Scheer from getting into power. He's a creepy little bastard.

It's a term that, on the face of it, would seem to be an oxymoron.
