A couple of months ago, in an essay that I posted on DU:GD, I noted that a number of the people associated with Trump were setting the stage for a violent reaction to efforts to remove him from office. I note that there were no responses to my claim. Today, on Morning Joe, that very topic was discussed, and I'm pleased there people are paying attention.
That shift in attention may be because most people consider Fox News to be and I hesitate to use this word more mainstream than Alex Jones or Roger Stone. But I would suggest that forum members instead focus upon two things: the overlap between these two news sources, and particularly the audience that is being targeted with the coup message.
Let's start with the groups that the Southern Poverty Law Center identifies as posing a threat to our society. Consider what politician speaks their language. Is there a political figure that the Nazi-KKK-types believe reflects their interests? Shares their belief that President Obama, that atheist Muslim, was born in Kenya?
The 2016 republican presidential primaries was the first time this group participated in a meaningful way since 1964's republican primary season. And they were not coming out from under the rocks to support Jeb Bush, or any other mainstream republican candidate. Rather, they were excited by the candidate who gave voice to their hatred.
These are, of course, the same people who listen to Steve Bannon, Alex Jones, and Roger Stone. They are convinced that the deep state is attempting a coup. When Trump spouts nonsense, such as that the investigation into the Trump-Russian scandal is just the Democrats being sore losers, this audience is incapable of processing that the FBI's counter-intelligence investigation started when most people were certain that Clinton was on the road to an easy victory.
This, of course, is central to the Trump-Fox News effort to denigrate the FBI. While Democrats and others on the political left are wary of the FBI generally for its past history among that agency's many duties is coordinating with state and local police departments. As Democrats, we know that historically, those state and local police agencies especially in specific regions of the country have long contained members who are at very least sympathetic to those who believe the Bannon type of paranoid conspiracies.
And this creates the potential for violence. Keep in mind that the FBI (and some other federal agencies) do respect the SPLC. Thus, for good or bad, the response to the right-wing militia in a western state over cattle grazing on federal lands, was handled more delicately than, say, a demonstration outside the republican national convention.
We have a president who has not only called for the arrest and prosecution of his political enemies, but he has openly endorsed police violence against suspects. What would one expect from a guy who borrowed Nixon's infamous law and order banner during his campaign?
Donald Trump had but two goals in running for president. He wanted to change the tax laws to benefit his family and friends. And he wanted to be a historic figure, the most powerful man in human history. Things such as his dislike of foreigners (re: non-white human beings) was secondary. But his advisers, such as Bannon, want to burn the forest. Hence, their appeal to the arsonists on the right-wing fringe.
These people are not capable of accomplishing their wild designs, of course. They aren't going to lead a revolution. But they are dangerous, in the context of running over a women at a counter-protest, and other, similar cowardly acts. As we recently witnessed, these are people who supported a creep that preyed upon teen-aged girls, over a good man who prosecuted the murderers who bombed four little girls in a church.
As William Faulkner noted, The past is never dead. It's not even past. We are entering a tense period in America. It's not the first time, and it won't be the last. It's good to be aware of what the opposition is up to, and why they are doing it. One of our greatest advantages is that most of them aren't very smart. Another thing we have on our side is the law. And the Constitution.

We not only have the law and the Constitution. We also have extreme awareness of the evil they're plotting.
If we're not ready for them yet, we soon will be. Mueller will lead us.

where principles should be. They roll only with others just like them, slash at anything that resembles tolerance or good will, burn bridges like they'll never have to travel over a familiar road again.
They have no use for poor people, sick people with inadequate health insurance, young adults carrying enormous student loan debts, homeless children. They'll look right past an inmate who just needs a DNA test to prove his innocence or a transgender person beaten half to death simply because he/she wants to be who they know they are. They spit out the word "Chicago" like it's the name of a threatening epidemic and plot ways to circumvent laws, rules and standards that are in place to help the least fortunate. They abhor voting rights, civil rights, gay rights, environmental rights, the right to choose....or any other rights that might help those who don't look like them.
Just know they're going to cheat, steal, obstruct, lie, collude, conspire, degrade. They'll all have flag pins....but that won't stop them from sullying everything our country stands for.
They are a threat and we must stop them, especially since their treacherous ways are bolder by the day.

(17,984 posts)I'm not sure I understand what you are getting at with your comments regarding the FBI being divided. Until I got to that part, I was thinking of how the FBI must have the white supremacists under close watch. Now I'm not sure if you are suggesting that we cannot trust them, that they may even side with the Nazis.

(73,513 posts)that the FBI is divided within. (There are retired FBI agents that are pro-Trump, and a few active in NYC. But they are insignificant.) What Trump et al are attempting is to divide state and local police forces, which do contain some KKK-types, from the FBI.

I've heard a few encouraging things tonight. The transition e-mails are being evaluated in relationship to the details and documentation that Flynn has provided. This has the White House rather upset.

President Trump may be chief of state, head of government and commander in chief, but his administration is shot through with disloyalists plotting to bring him down.
We are approaching something of a civil war where the capital city seeks the overthrow of the sovereign and its own restoration.
Thus far, it is a nonviolent struggle, though street clashes between pro- and anti-Trump forces are increasingly marked by fistfights and brawls. Police are having difficulty keeping people apart. A few have been arrested carrying concealed weapons.
That the objective of this city is to bring Trump down via a deep state-media coup is no secret. Few deny it.
{...}
The leak of Gen. Michael Flynn's conversation with the Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, after Obama imposed sanctions on Russia for the hacking of the DNC, may have been a product of the unmasking operation. The media hit on Flynn cost him the National Security Council post.
Trump has had many accomplishments since his election. Yet his enemies in the media and their deep state allies have often made a purgatory of his presidency.
What he and his White House need to understand is that this is not going to end, that this is a fight to the finish, that his enemies will not relent until they see him impeached or resigning in disgrace.
To prevail, Trump will have to campaign across this country and wage guerrilla war in this capital, using the legal and political weapons at his disposal to ferret out the enemies within his own government.
Not only is this battle essential, if Trump hopes to realize his agenda, it is winnable. For the people sense that the Beltway elites are cynically engaged in preserving their own privileges, positions and power.
If the president cannot rewrite Obamacare or achieve tax reform, he should not go around the country in 2018 wailing about Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer. They are not the real adversaries. They are but interchangeable parts.
He should campaign against the real enemies of America First by promising to purge the deep state and flog its media collaborators.
Time to burn down the Bastille.

(35,454 posts)We do have the law and constitution on our side...but I worry about the effectiveness of such. The lies being blast from the mega horns and bully pulpit are tremendous and in cases seem to be gaining headway. Are there secret societies, such as Mussolini's black shirts ready to spring into action and keep arrests from being made? The whole business of Prince & Oliver North plotting is worrisome and certainly outside of the constitution. Trump's own spy agency? It all sounds so conspiratorial but I never thought he'd try to set up his own spy agency or that Prince would push himself as Viceroy of Afghanistan and have his own private army.
Erik & Ollie have a mercenary force, paid for by various non-government and foreign entities, prepared in case there is an "emergency" within the USA. That's not good.
