... the poverty there is quite evenly spread out, and for most people life is OK. I am Danish but was living in the western part of Russia on and of for 16 years, through the end of communism and the chaotic years following. I went there when it became more possible to travel freely around. I spent my time in Russia seeing my beautiful daughters grow up, and they have chosen to stay and has now good lives there. My (former) wife is a devoted Christian and part of the local Orthodox church - also during Communism times, which gave her some harassment but nothing seriously bad. I never had problem with police or paid bribes, though I dress and look very locally. My life in Russia was in no way scary, but just like living in poverty in so many other places.

For most people politics is not a part of the daily life, and Kremlin is far away over in Moscow. We were just surviving day by day, and I know my Russians as very polite and helpful people - and we had happily nothing to do with the bastards in power. The political elite of Russia has mostly worked on getting rich themselves, and since the whole economy is smaller than Italy's, there is little to share for everybody else. This is my findings, and I am mostly humbled by the great hospitality, I have always met. I do think Russia is wonderful, but their political leaders are just terrible and I despise their focus on military power.
