Pokemon Go: Exercise impact 'short-lived'

As cynics derided the popularity of Pokemon Go a few months ago, some tried to seek out the positives.

Sure, hundreds of millions of players were wandering around, eyes glued to smartphones, putting their energies into "catching" imaginary creatures in the augmented reality game.

----------------------------------------

I'd forgotten all about this. I recall the media saying it was going to make a huge impact at the holidays.
I guess it could make a resurgence. But I no longer see people walking around aimlessly, while looking at their phone—like I did during the short-lived craze.

They should have released it in spring, just when it was starting to get warmer. It might have lasted longer.

Who the hell wants to walk around looking at their phones and landing in puddles of black slush unexpectedly?

I still love winning battles and collecting gold. They do need to create more Pokemon though. I walk for enjoyment anyway, so it's a fun thing to do while walking.

they have added new ones, but more could be added.

You do have to actually move to get any benefits from it and a lot of people were busy working on cheats to get around all the walking.

I walk anyway, so...why not play?

8. It's a deeper systemic problem of all online-games.

You have to offer more and more content, because the players keep reaching all the possible goals.

And what kinds of rewards do you offer? Purely cosmetic or rewards that make the player stronger?

And how do you balance players of different strength?
If you don't, the new players leave eventually, because they lose too often.
If you do, there's a point of diminishing returns for high-end players and they leave out of boredom.

And you can only create randomized content to a limited degree. Players with good luck will take their luck for granted and will demand more. Players with bad luck will regard the game as unfair and give up out of frustration. (It's basically psychological "hygiene-factors", just for gamers instead of employees.)

10. It's a *bad* pokemon game.

It's even more bare bones than Pokemon Red, and i'm fairly sure Sun and Moon has sucked the life out of it, because those are *good* pokemon games. Also it has some major systemic problems in that the game just isn't very engaging if you don't regularly live in an urban area.

Also Niantic is a trash company.

Took my son one weekend to delete the app.

Took my daughter 3 gig and a phone that started taking a dump on her to delete it.
