Given a self-admitted lack of musical sophistication, the Chess brothers allowed artists such as Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf to play their music their way. Unlike say, the likes of Phil Spector, he didn't attempt to redirect or overproduce their sound in order to appeal to a broader audience, so the purity of the music was not compromised.
