Lightning strike in Echo Park, Los Angeles (July 18, 2015)

I saw this picture on FaceBook this afternoon.
In Southern California, we are having a very rare July rain storm pushing through (remnants of hurricane Dolores, I believe).
There was lots of lightning and heavy rain in many parts (including at my home in the San Pedro area—more to come, too I hear).

Someone in Echo Park (an area just outside of Hollywood) posted this picture of a poor palm tree who was a bit too tall, and took a hit from lightning.

I agree. I recall a last day of August rain, but that's about it. C Moon Jul 2015 #2

Rain and lightning at this time of year is essentially unheard-of here. I don't remember it happening here before, and I've lived in LA since 1969.

GREAT photo.
