Pres Obama is at it again in India~Modi Shifts on Climate Change With India Renewables Goal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India is ready to expand its use of renewable energy as a way to reduce greenhouse gas pollution, a signal that his government is moving toward joining an international deal on global warming.

After a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama in New Delhi, the prime minister said that his nation along with all others has an obligation to act on reducing the fossil-fuel emissions blamed for damaging the climate

The remarks represent a shift in India’s tone on global warming. It previously emphasized the historical responsibility of industrial nations for creating the problem, and the Indian government has been ambiguous about whether it will adopt domestic targets for reducing greenhouse gases. Modi’s comments suggest he’s ready to work with Obama on a deal in Paris in December that would for the first time require all nations, rich and poor alike, to restrain emissions.

India is the world’s third biggest polluting nation behind China and the U.S., making Modi’s participation in the United Nations climate deal crucial. In November, Obama reached a landmark agreement with President Xi Jinping designed to bring China into a system limiting emissions

The Earth's two most populous nations are now on board with trying to mitigate climate change. Even after all these years of watching President Obama at work, I am just staggered.

On the other hand, it really does follow his well-established pattern, doesn't it? While his opponents are sneering that he is weak (or dictatorial, depending on the weather) and his alleged supporters are whining that he hasn't done anything lately (or since taking office, depending on the weather) he and his people are ever so quietly lining up the dominoes and then over they go.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have Obama for president for another eight years? All the good work he's doing for us and our country (and Earth) is at risk of being undone by his successor. I mention "at risk" meaning, it's not necessarily going to happen under another Democratic president (and I have no doubt we'll have another Democratic president in 2017) but there is a certain risk that it might.

Anyway, not a time to be a debbie-downer. This is wonderful news and something I'm certain his most loyal critics on this site would praise as a good thing...right?

this country has ever been graced with. I'm terrified of losing him in two years, Cha. I really am. Eight years is certainly not enough. I can't think of any other president who can stand such unprecedented hostility, disrespect, and obstructionism as President Obama was made to experience...and then still get wonderful things done for the American people - even the ingrates and perpetual whiners.

I sincerely believe that President Obama should be carved on Mount Rushmore. If ever a president deserves to be with Presidents Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt, and Lincoln, it's President Obama. I mean that with all of my heart.

Jan 2015
http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/01/25/us-india-obama-idUSKBN0KX0OW20150125

(Reuters) - In a glow of bonhomie, U.S. President Barack Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled plans to unlock billions of dollars in nuclear trade and to deepen defense ties, steps they hope will establish an enduring strategic partnership.

The two countries reached an understanding on two issues that, despite a groundbreaking 2006 agreement, had stopped U.S. companies from setting up reactors in India and had become one of the major irritants in bilateral relations.

And in the meantime, India is planning on DOUBLING their coal output:

http://www.smh.com.au/business/mining-and-resources/energyhungry-india-doubles-down-on-coal-20150126-12y037.html

Coal production is slated to expand here in the coming months, part of the new government's ambitious push to double India's output to more than 1 billion tons annually to meet the needs of a burgeoning economy - with growth now set to outpace China's, according to several forecasts.

snip

Even under the best-case scenario, coal will continue to account for more than 60 per cent of the country's power capacity until 2030, according to one government model, although renewable energy such as wind and solar power will rise from 6 per cent to 18 per cent.
