FBI is investigating whether the explosion was an act of domestic terrorism
Sanders said no one was injured in the explosion and there was only minimal damage to the exterior of the building.
She added that a can full of gasoline had been placed near the device, but did not ignite in the explosion
snip//
Sanders said authorities have identified what she called a potential person of interest in the explosion.
She described the individual as a white male believed to be around 40 years old.
Sanders said he is balding and may be driving a 2000 or older model, dirty, white pick-up truck with paneling, a dark colored bed liner, open tailgate, and a missing or covered license plate.

The NAACP chapters president, Harry Allen Jr., told The Gazette he would wait for the outcome of the investigation before labeling the explosion a hate crime.

I stand with Rep John Lewis~ It's sounds like Luck that the gas can didn't ignite and no one was hurt.
"Sanders added that the FBIs Denver field office is working with the Colorado Springs Police Department at the scene. The Denver Post reported agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives were also on scene."

(30,439 posts)The suspect is a 40-year-old balding white guy driving an old, dirty pick-up truck.
Why does that description not surprise me?
This should be getting way more coverage...but we know how the media works in this country.
I hope they find this asshole.

Not just "dirty white pickup" but more specifically..
"..Sanders said he is balding and may be driving a 2000 or older model, dirty, white pick-up truck with paneling, a dark colored bed liner, open tailgate, and a missing or covered license plate.
They seem to have a lot of Investigators working on it so many we'll hear something tomorrow!
like I said.. Just luck no one was hurt.

(7,817 posts)Nothing on Local TV News. No mention so far on MSM outlets. Raleigh N&O had nothing in print or online.
It feels like its being treated like a local Colorado incident since the bomb didn't "go off". 1st report I found presents it like a firecracker in an alley, ie: no big deal.

Example:
WaPO headline yesterday reads:
"A day later, still unclear whether NAACP was target of bomb in Colorado Springs"

(365 posts)I should just go look it up myself, but I'll ask anyway: was the bomb AT the NAACP office, or NEAR it? I've seen headlines saying both, but I haven't been able to spend much time online the last few days & I'm behind on the news.

(365 posts)I didn't mean to put you on the spot when you were busy. I've been helping a friend who is a hoarder pack up & clean for a move, for the second time in six months, and I'm exhausted and in a lot of pain, so I guess I was being a little lazy. I almost always look things up for myself rather than ask people for information, but I'm not at my best right now.
Cha
(295,899 posts)am still sorry.
Hope you get better soon, WANerdy.. that doesn't sound like fun.. help a "hoarder pack and clean for a move"! "2nd time in 6 months".. it gets worse.. you're in pain!

(7,817 posts)Because the bomb was located behind the part that houses the beauty shop rather than 20 feet further down the walkway there is "some question" whether the target was the NACCP or not. This is a small commercial building roughly the size of a 3 bedroom home or a typical McDonald's restaurant site.
see photo:
The fact that this walkway behind the building was easily accessible from street side (about 12 feet behind the camera here) and that the results of the gas can exploding would likely have destroyed the rear of the whole building seems to escape the reasoning of Headline News et al: (No one died and the bomb failed so where's the news drama in that? If the bomber was so incompetent the threat wasn't really "that" serious so neither is the danger to the potential victims.)
For what it is worth the "jokers" are suggesting a middle-aged bald white man had a grudge against the beauty shop. 6 lbs of explosive are not a joke where I come from. The guy who did this meant to hurt people in the building and did it during business hours.
WhiteAndNerdy

(53,823 posts)Thankfully, no one was hurt nor killed, but, this could forbade of bad things to come. This must be so confusing for some who seem think that a Black president heralded the end of racism.
Cha
(295,899 posts)Sure, the headlines today are all about the Supreme Court's decision to declare Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional. In one big swoop, the court basically said that a law passed in 1965 has served its purpose.
The law was put in place largely to ensure that states didn't make changes to election rules without seeking federal approval first. It was an extra check against any racially motivated actions to prevent people (often minorities) from getting to the polls. Today the court invalided the formula that determines which jurisdictions' voting laws must seek that permission from the Department of Justice before making any changes.

Unfortunately.. electing Obama as President has brought the racists out of the woodwork in which they dwelled.
Yes, it was so lucky that no one was hurt or killed.. but I'm thinking the bomber had a bigger blast in mind. And, it does look like a hate crime.
We shall see. Mahalo BtA

(53,823 posts)"Soft" racism is rampant. Too many people think racism (and other bigotries) are limited to 'bad names' and 'old stereotypes.' It should be so easy to spot! You are correct that the election of our president really brought out some racist bigots; sadly, not all of them are on the right.

(53,823 posts)Just like the troll banned for anti-Semitism (who also claimed gays are not a minority because some of us can now legally marry...BAWHAHAHA!), they don't limit their hate to one group. There are those non-RW who delight in pitting one minority group against another. I recently had the displeasure of reading a thread about gays and Jews and how their concerns mock/take away from racism. Sometimes, the call is coming from inside the house!

one of his accomplishments is In 1960, Lewis became one of the 13 original Freedom Riders. This took a lot of guts you can bet on that.

(295,899 posts)means that the intended victims were lucky.
"The owner of the building, Gene Southerland, says the pipe bomb failed to work as intended. He says the CSPD bomb squad told him that if it had, the blast could have been far worse. As it was, there were no injuries to anyone in the area--just a lot of very shaken up people."

Bless Social Media!
The news undercovered the NAACP bombing, so Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter picked up the slack.
Trust in the media is at an all-time lowa September 2014 Gallup poll found that only 40 percent of Americans trust the media a great deal or fair amount. As the media expand into new domains of news reporting via social media networks and new mobile technology, Americans may be growing disenchanted with what they consider mainstream news as they seek out their own personal veins of getting information, Gallup's report on the data speculated
That disenchantment was on display this week after a bomb went off near an NAACP office in Colorado on Tuesday morning. There were no injuries, only minor damage to the building, and no official motive, but the incident holds significance in the context of the recent #BlackLivesMatter protests and a history of NAACP bombings. But when the story only received spotty coverage online, people turned to their own personal veins of informationtheir social media feeds.
