http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/national-international/NATL-BAY-COPY-Woman-Arrested-at-SJ-Starbucks-for-Potential-Orange-Juice-Poisoning-205443031.htmlA 50-year-old woman was arrested Monday night after police say she put two bottles of orange juice which they say were filled with rubbing alcohol on a refrigerator shelf at a Starbucks in California.
San Jose police took Ramineh Behbehanian into custody on an attempted murder charge, because the orange juice she had removed from her bag and put in the fridge contained what police said were lethal quantities of isopropyl alcohol. She is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.

Authorities are still not sure why she would have allegedly mixed rubbing alcohol with some orange juice in the afternoon, left the bottles in the refrigerated section alongside some yogurt and milk and left the store about 3:30 p.m. local time.
What. The. Fuck.
Much more at the link.

But, like the dad intereviewed at the video in the link, if I walked into a Starbucks (something I don't do but maybe once a year), my children would be likely to head for the juices/etc. first and the potential threat to young children from this particular act is very concerning.

(20,600 posts)on products bought in a market. I imagine that if this evil scheme had succeeded and if someone had bought the OJ, they would have noticed the smell or the taste real quick on this tainted OJ, and probably would not have drank it or drank much of it before noticing. Bizarre story though.

(9,213 posts)at starbucks or somewhere? Like what if they started working there and then for a whole day was putting ricin in the coffee and serving it out to people. This shit is scary!

I know this sounds strange but it's true. It's really not likely to happen. When the original anthrax letters were going out after September 11th attacks, some California newspaper did a piece on how a single person with a prop airplane (like a Cessna) could spread enormous amounts of weaponized anthrax over a city like (I believe their example was) San Francisco.
It would sicken, injure and kill hundreds if not thousands or more people.
Also, a little more realistically, I think it's that al-Qaeda guy Adam Gadahn (aka "Azzam the American" indicated that al-Qaeda operatives in America should simply purchase firearms and literally take potshots at people. Just covertly snipe people indefinitely. That would be incredibly "easy" to do. Shit, that's what we've almost got with just regular Americans and guns, anyway. Point is, it's not happening. The last time there was any kind of sniping incident was the DC Sniper and that was not related to al-Qaeda.
I think it's arguably self-evident that, while it's true that there are people who would like to destroy America, kill Americans, etc., that there aren't (for whatever reason) enough people who are in America who are actually interested in doing such a thing.
Yes, someone could do what you said with ricin. It's a real possibility. There are also lots of other things which are equally "easy" which would sow panic and death.
Interestingly, in the whole history of America (pre and post 9/11), those things are exceptionally rare. The acts that do occur are much more likely to be motivated by personal reasons than ideological ones.
Just sayin'
