Industrial worker falls into meat blender, dies

Industrial worker falls into meat blender, dies

CLACKAMAS, Ore. - An industrial worker fell into a large meat blender over the weekend and died, deputies said Monday

~snip~

She said the company was cited in October after an inspector found the meat-grinding room was not locked down properly during cleaning and that an "unexpected start up of the machine" could cause injuries.

We looked into the Interstate Meat Distributor's history and also discovered that in November of 2005, a cleaning crew employee lost his finger in a ribbon blender while cleaning the machine. OSHA cited the company following what happened.

...it happened, what they fell from or whatever to land them in the machine.

Terrible accident. Yesterday, I was watching an interview with Clarence Thomas and even for the little tiny bit I watched, he ripped on OSHA twice with lame jokes about it. This is why we have protections like OSHA, and worker safety is no laughing matter.

I recall when they decided to take the 2000 Presidental Election case, their reputation plummeted among lawyers and when the decision came down, the was a rush of lawyers criticizing them for taking the case and ruling as they did.

You are really seeking bottom when lawyers look down upon you.

I've been in meat processing plants - very dangerous places to work even with well-trained employees, proper safety equipment and enforcement (self-enforcement and the government oversight which forces self-enforcement).

OSHA is the enforcement arm for worker safety (and states have their own agencies as well).

NIOSH is basically the research arm, the agencies which studies and makes recommendations for what and how to protect workers (think repetitive motion and lockout devices for safety and exposure to airborne contaminants for industrial hygiene). As big a target as OSHA is for Republicans and their corporate handlers, NIOSH was gutted even more almost immediately after Bush took office.

Kind of like the NRA getting Congress to impose restrictions on the CDC in studying gun fatality statistics. Without research and evidence, it is kind of tough to come up with proper recommendations for worker protection - and if you do, you get attacked for not having the evidence (stacked against business-funded "scientists" with their own "evidence.&quot .

Sound familiar? It's what happens when our leaders confuse capitalism for democracy.

And something about not learning from history and being doomed to repeat it.

And then something about how books that were intended as cautionary tales are now being used as training manuals.

This. has. got. to. stop.

That employee wasn't trained properly, the employer has lax training and safety practices; he should never have been allowed near equipment not locked/tagged.

California Man Dies After Falling Into Meat Grinder

02/28/11

HANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a 72-year-old worker who fell into a meat-grinding machine at a Kings County meat processing plant.

The Fresno Bee reports that the accident happened early Monday morning at Central Valley Meat Co.

The man, a Hanford resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending the notification of his family.

A spokeswoman for the California’s workplace safety agency says the plant also was investigated for an accident there in 2004, when a worker who was cleaning a meat grinder activated it and was caught in the machine. Spokeswoman Krisann Chasarik says the worker was able to switch off the machine before getting sucked in.

we stink as a country anymore.

Once upon a time the meat industry was one of the most unionized of industries. The boys with the bucks lured foreign workers in to the US to bust the unions and the safety and health were short shrifted.

Bring back the unions and put them fucking union busters (the bosses) in jail as part of the immigration plan.
