American eyewitness describes ‘terrifying’ brawl on Mount Everest

>>A mountaineer on Everest described Monday the “terrifying” scene of two famous European climbers fighting with Nepalese guides in a high-altitude brawl that has sparked a police investigation.

Ueli Steck, a Swiss national who holds climbing records, and Simone Moro of Italy, who has climbed Everest four times, were approaching the 7,470-metre (24,500 feet) Camp Three on Saturday when the bust-up occurred.

The American eyewitness, speaking to AFP by telephone and on condition of anonymity, said Steck and Moro were asked to wait on the mountain while a group of Nepalese rigged up some ropes.
-----------------
“The Sherpas told the team not to climb above them while they were fixing the ropes but they did it anyway. Then some ice fell and hit the Sherpas, which made them angry,” he said.<<

No sympathy for the climbers.

If you arrogantly disregard the sherpas and thus threaten them with injury or death, don't expect a tea party in response. Color me unimpressed with modern climbers like this, no matter WHAT their records.

They could just leave your ass on the mountain or lead you off a cliff.

Why it is considered such a feat when someone from Europe or America climbs Mt. Everest when it takes the local people to guide them? The real mountaineers are the Sherpas, but they might as well be mountain goats for all the consideration they get in their human abilities.

It's presented as "normal." And because this is what we (most of us) have grown up with being presented that way, we filter everything through that lens.

Though before the Europeans came the Sherpas stayed off the mountain. Most of the ones Mallory asked said "why the hell would you want to go up there? Don't you know how high that is?

But, yeah: Everest is at this point a tourist climb.
