Albert Hofmann, the pioneering Swiss chemist and advocate of psychedelics who discovered the hallucinogenic properties of LSD, died Tuesday. He was 102.
Hofmann reportedly died of a heart attack at his home in Basel, Switzerland.
Hofmanns most famous discovery happened on April 16, 1943. He was researching the synthesis of a lysergic acid compound, LSD-25, when he inadvertently absorbed a bit through his fingertips. Intrigued by the effect it had on his perception, Hofmann decided further exploration was warranted. Three days later, on April 19, he ingested 250 micrograms of LSD, embarking on the first full-fledged acid trip. That day became known among LSD fans as bicycle day because Hofmann began experiencing the drugs intense effects on his bicycle trip home from the lab.

(12,844 posts)Still in high school, 4-way windowpane with 3 friends. Albert (the "experienced" member of our group) did half a square (2/4) and we drove in his car to see a triple feature of Marx Brothers movies. That may have been the hardest I ever laughed in my life. I was flying on my 1/4, but not hallucinating. When we left the theater Albert was flying a little too high to drive, so I did. He had an 8-track player in his car, and on the way home we listened to a new recording by Pink Floyd -- Dark Side of the Moon.
Acid became our drug of choice over the next several years, tripping a couple times a month. Never had a bad one, but it's been about 25 years since the last time.

(976 posts)I cannot remember what it's called, but there is another drug that's called a miracle drug for tripping. It starts with an M, I cannot remember the rest. They say it's like entering heaven. That's on my bucket list and I better hurry, doc says I got six months life left, give or take a few days. I got diagnosed with kidney cancer about 2 years ago and the cancer cells are unrecognizable, rare. They know it's cancer, I know it's cancer, (pain in my middle section and right leg.) The chemo they gave me did not know it was suppose to fight the cancer (did not work). So yea, I'd like to trip, but with the M stuff, not lsd. Peace.

(21,088 posts)I've never tried it, but always wanted to.
I've always wondered what dying on an acid trip would be like. I heard Tim Leary did it... I know there has been a lot of therapeutic work with psilocybin in terminal patients, around reducing the fear of death, combating depression and coming to closure with one's life. It apparently works very well.
Good luck with your journey, whether or not it includes a trip.

(101,265 posts)We've had this (35 recs); the story about the rape of a disabled girl, which happened in 2000; and the "Iranian cleric says breasts cause earthquakes", which was 3 years old. There may have been more. Is some website digging up old articles because they can't be bothered to report on new stuff?

(976 posts)I have tried LSD several times and I finally had a bad experience, that put an end to that. I stayed with coke and pot and alcohol after that. At about 30, I started the process of recovery, went to 3 meetings at an Alcoholics Anonymous fellowship, over several months. Finally I stayed and that lasted 14 years, until I decided to drink again. I now have cancer, so I have taken a lot of oxycontin and oxycodone over the last 2 years to control pain, but even that is starting not to help. My doc told me last week I got about 6 months left, bummer. So, I am not abusing my medications and take as prescribed, which seems to be OK.
I know there is another drug that makes you trip, it's called DMT and it's getting better reviews than LSD. This is the one I would like to take before I go. It's also known as the Spirit Drug. Here is a video.
Peace.

(12,504 posts)...about your cancer. I have a good friend also with kidney cancer, and if there is one little thing that I learned, it was that there are already very few treatment options for kidney cancer. As up thread you described it as a rare form, even less option available to you. Go in peace and fulfill as many items as you can on your bucket list.
