Cool page from a Creationist science book

Let's just let the mystery that is electricity blow our minds for a second. Electricity comes all the way from the sun, and yet outer space isn't electrocuted. God is wonderful.

One thing we've got a pretty good idea about is what electricity is and where it comes from. We even know how to generate it from anything that moves.

These kids are going to grow up incredibly ignorant. I don't think we as a country can afford this.

School curricula, even home school curricula, need to adhere to some basic standards and make sure kids don't get told lies just so their parents can keep pretending a collection of stone age myths is the literal truth and everybody else is wrong.

Feeding your kids crap like this in the modern world is child abuse. I can think of no other word for consistently lying to them about the nature of the world they live in and will inherit.

The Bible doesn't say anything about electricity except for the occasional lightning bolt. Without having a clear Bible-based explanation, "it's all just theories".

And if you taught kids to respect the science about electricity, they might start asking why they shouldn't respect what they say about biology. That just creates an inroad for the devil, you see...

Tue Apr 30, 2013, 08:42 AM

IMO, I think benefits accrue to a coalition of creationists and raw capitalists from a general war on science it works something like this:

God is out there somewhere and god's influence is what explains how things are. In his wisdom god created institutions and designated power structures to rule Earth.

It follows that if people follow the teachings of the institutions and the instructions of the designated leadership class, they will behave in a manner satisfactory to god. Historically that meant searching for and finding god occurred within religious frameworks, though god and religion had influence in all domains of human and natural activity. Through natural philosophy the search for the fingerprints of god on nature became the stuff of the search.

Over time natural philosophers transformed into empirical scientists. Scientists have spent and still spend a lot of time looking at how things in the natural world are. In this line or argument it follows that scientists should run into the influence of god. Scientists don't concur that the influence of god or evidence of the presence of god have been found.

But scientists don't know everything and haven't looked everywhere. It's possible that evidence of god is out there in those gaps, which is the concept of The God Of The Gaps (Gotg)

The current anti-science push in some fundamentalist education is really about creating doubts about science. This tends to expand the possibilities of the gaps. It's a modern crusade to expand the domain of Gotg

The comment could end there if this was about understanding electricity. But it isn't.The nasty thing is that a general war on science serves not only those who claim authority to represent the one almighty god, but the conflict also serves the needs of the Mammonists who have little interests in traditional behavioral teachings of religion. The Mammonists understand that the war on science also minimizes the influence science can have in social and environmental policy.

"Mammon Inc." doesn't want the social and environmental impacts (or any other concerns) recognized as valid. The Mammonists don't want their goals or methods impugned by science any more than the followers of Gotg want the closing of the gaps to squeeze Gotg out of existence.

Consequently, the attacks on science are promoted by "Mammon Inc", and the result is a coalition of anti-science interests in fundamentalist religion and Randian raw capitalism.

Which is bullshit on several levels. First off, you can easily see and measure distinct and numerable levels of electricity. You can also see and measure the effects of electricity, based on predictive models of the phenomenon of electric power. What's more, you can feel it when you touch a live wire. Ouch, of course, but it's empirically detectable. And finally, yes, you can actually see electricity. If you've ever watched an old Boris Karloff mad scientist movie, you already have seen electricity.

bulb has absorbed as much as it will hold, there is a dark spot on the side.

If one is using the older, screw-in incandescent bulbs, it is better if the metal base is at the bottom, which allows more of the dark to accumulate there rather than on the side of the bulb.

This is all true.

Tue Apr 30, 2013, 08:03 AM

You see, as the dark collects at the base of the newer bulbs, the cord sucks out all the accumulated dark and it goes into the outlet (which is why they call it an "outlet", duh!) and through the lines to the electric company where it's burned to create clouds.

This is why non-rechargeable batteries go dead. They've absorbed all the dark they can, and you have to replace them with a nice, fresh, empty battery.

Then, when God created the earth 6,000 or so years ago, He realized that if it were always dark, Adam and Eve wouldn't be able to see the dinosaurs sneaking up on them (dinosaurs were a lot smarter in those days). So He created the sun to circle the earth and vacuum up all the dark on the side of the earth where the sun was. Being on a budget, He couldn't create two suns, so A&E had to take their chances while the sun was over on the other side of the earth. Which also explains why you don't hear about Zaxtor and Rumfus, Adam and Eve's OTHER two sons, who got eaten by dinosaurs at night while harvesting figs.

I've got it all written down somewhere.

Science has the effing answer to that one, a mystery no more.

And the tides, look up at the sky and you'll see, gasp the moon and thanks to the nature of gravity we get the tides. Tides come in, tides go out. We CAN explain that.
