I made the mistake of reading some of the comments on the SI site. I guess it's safe to say that sports people are not always the most enlightened among us.

I wish Jason nothing but the best going forward.

The major sites are filled with idiotic comments. Most of us that enjoy discussing sports do it on more specialized sites targeted towards our teams and or/sports, and they usually have better moderation.

And, on the sites I frequent the reactions range from "It's about time" to "who cares? it's no big deal"

this guy makes me wish I were a gay man! So courageous, and hubba-hubba! Good on ye, Mr. Collins!

I personally couldn't care less, nor am I really interested in a person's sexuality. That should be considered "none of our business". I commend Mr. Collins for deciding to help enlighten those that need it, but it's about as necessary information (for me and many others) as what kind if cereal do you eat for breakfast.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for him. But then he would have had the whole off-season to have his "conversation."

people really paying attention to athletic events (and aren't dyed in the wool enthusiasts who follow a sport like religion) than when the playoffs are starting.

Maybe more athletes will feel encouraged to be able to live their lives as they wish to.

I honestly can't wait for the day when someone's sexuality isn't news. And as the olds die off, it will become more and more a non-issue. For the most part, unless they are brainwashed fundamentalist religios zealots or live in an area of the country that still thinks there should still be separate water fountains for "white" and "colored" people, the younger generation doesn't understand what the big deal is or why in the world it's still illegal for 2 people of the same sex to be married in the eyes of the law.

Really, when going out and meeting people, you ask, "are you single, are you gay or straight, and maybe what's your sign?" It's not that damned hard to figure it out. I really don't get why anyone would be worried about being hit on by someone of the same sex? I have. I'm not gay, but I brush it off the same as I would with a guy hitting on me. Frankly, I find it a bit flattering that I'm still attractive to anyone of any sex, especially, on days when I'm tired, not dressed in anything best, and the person doing the "hitting on me" is an attractive person of either sex. LOL.

But if he was on one of the playoff teams, I suspect that he'd be strongly advised by co-workers and management alike to stay in the closet until after the postseason -- otherwise he would be a "distraction." Why would the NBA be happy about the public focusing on Collins when they're supposed to be focusing on the playoffs?

I was watching Mike & Mike on ESPN this morning and they had a big long totally awesome conversation about it. Mike on the left was talking about growing up in Greenwich Village, and it was just as common to see two guys holding hands as it was to see a man and woman holding hands, he had friends with two moms, etc.

Mike on the right was talking about how it's somewhat offensive to refer to being gay as something that requires "tolerance" as if it takes special effort to "tolerate" people.

I was pretty excited to see it be the major topic of conversation on ESPN, with no concessions toward bigotry at all.

If it were off season, I'm not sure that would have happened.
