It's likely I wont see anyone I ever knew- it's for all alumni years and I probably won't enjoy most of it... but it might be their last reunion ever. Sotomayor went there a few years before me, as did five of my brothers and sisters, but I don't know of anyone who is going. She went last year and has since been helping them petition the diocese to keep it open. I'd love to meet her, loved her book. And I'm sad about the school closing. But everyone who taught when I was there is dead, I won't know anyone, and I'm a childless atheist. Who will not have an easy time pretending I am having fun if I am not. Yikes.
I HATE these things. Should I go?

(16,254 posts)You'll regret it if she is there and you aren't. What does it matter if you don't know anyone? It's not a popularity contest. Go!
Oh, and if you have a copy of her book, take it and ask her to autograph it. She'll be proud to do so.

(4,243 posts)Just find someone to go along with you and tell them you won't be there long. Just long enough to meet Justice Sotomayor.
Edited to add: Oh yeah, and we will be expecting pictures!

If you want to kiss a bunch of bad memories goodbye, definitely go. It's unlikely Justice Sotomayor will turn up two years in a row, but you never know. I'm sure it depends on her schedule.
However, it's an opportunity to give your old classrooms the finger and crow that you've now outlived them

(47,209 posts)the old grade school classrooms because my friend had a PT job cleaning them. We used to party with the janitors on their shift, and just bug out, sitting in those chairs again after just a few years out. Jeeze, those nuns were mean.

If you admire her, you should go! If you don't, you'll always wonder why, and perhaps regret, you didn't.

(1,741 posts)So what if you don't know anyone there? Mingle. Talk to people. Everyone there has a story. Someone there might be the next person to rise to fame. But someone there could also be just a fellow human being you find value in meeting. Or who finds value in meeting you. If you go with this attitude, it won't be a waste if you don't meet Sotomayor. And if you do meet her it will be a nice bonus.
