The suspects accused of raping and molesting a 13-year-old mentally disabled girl videotaped part of the crime, authorities said.
District Attorney Pat Head would not say what the videotape revealed, but said he did not plan to show it to the grand jury.
Up to 25 males ages 12 to 25 raped and molested the girl for 12 hours after luring her off of a bicycle and into an apartment building, police said Wednesday.
Eight suspects have been arrested and warrants were issued for three others sought in the Oct. 13-14 attack, Cobb County police spokesman Dana Pierce said.
Lured, Then Attacked Repeatedly Police said four men leaving a high school football game met the girl on her bicycle and persuaded her to accompany them to an apartment. They raped the girl and then took her to an abandoned apartment in the same complex, where as many as 20 males attacked her, police said.

(53,410 posts)The only good thing about this rape is she was treated and released which means she wasn't badly hurt physically. But they probably didn't hurt her more because they really thought no one would believe her or that she wouldn't tell. But the next victim might not be that lucky.
How can so many Goddammed rapists find each other?! How does a fucking gang like this get started?! My first thought is that it can only get started in a culture that allows it. A rape culture.

(9,527 posts)I mean I can't imagine going to any of my friends, male or female and saying "hey why don't we go rape/sexually assault somebody?" That's not something you can say "I was just kidding" when they tell you to fuck off. I guess it probably starts with smaller things, but I can't see a bridge that would get me to thinking that would be something my friends would be up for. And I doubt any of my friends would think that I would be okay with them inviting me to such a thing.
Maybe I've just been hanging out with the parts of humanity that don't entirely suck.
I remember being on a high school trip and one of my female classmates got pass out drunk, which she proceeded to do in my bed. Neither myself or the other guy who was my roommate on that trip touched her or talked about doing so. I just can't imagine thinking that's an okay topic to bring up casually. I'm not saying that not raping her makes us heroes, but it does make me wonder what sort of people get together who can openly talk about such things.

(90,560 posts)The fact that animals like that can record their boasts instead of just elbowing each other in the ribs and chuckling about it later makes it more likely that the rest of us will hear about it. Society is justifiably revolted. But how convenient for prosecutors to be able to point to videos where the perpetrators are identifiable and in process of committing their crimes.
Wtf is that with bringing in 12 y.o. boys? Some kind of initiation? Ugh.

(3,411 posts)And any other girls/women around them. It's incredibly stupid how guys think that they are separate from women and somehow higher when they wouldn't exist if it wasn't for a woman, nevertheless be the person they are now (if they were raised by their mom.)
Maybe we also need to encourage children to make more friends of the opposite sex, to prevent the sort of mentality in guys where they think about women so foreignly as to not care if they harm girls/women like this. It may be that males see their mother as their mother, not in the same category as other women, and thus the connection is not made, but if they had platonic female friends then they wouldn't feel as separate from the opposite sex and their idea of the opposite sex would be better, enough that chauvanist, misogynistic ideas in the minds of guys are much less likely to happen, thus guys are much less likely to rape and participate in things like this. Just an idea of mine.

(101,271 posts)Jury selection began last week. But all the defendants have now pleaded guilty to statutory rape or child molestation, which carry sentences of seven to 10 years in prison. Rape and sexual exploitation charges were dropped.
"This is not a case of terrible, forceful gang rape," said Cobb County District Attorney Pat Head.
The defendants, most of whom were teenagers at the time, took turns having sex with the girl over 10 hours in an abandoned apartment in 2000. Head said there was evidence of physical force on two or three occasions, and the girl said at least once she wanted to leave.

(22,666 posts)Gee. I wonder if Mr. "You Deserve Rape" ( http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022754699 ) thinks this 13-year-old disabled girl "deserved" this. Was she dressed like a slut? I doubt it. So how then did this innocent deserve this barbarism? Even if she DID dress like a slut I fail to see how she "deserved" this.
I think Mr. "You Deserve Rape" should be brought to explain his radical Taliban views. Perhaps he ought to be shown the videotapes and be forced to explain to the WORLD how he thinks this girl "deserved" to be assaulted and raped. Because that's what his sign says.
Honestly, until we get NASTY with these bastards, this isn't going to stop.

(5,611 posts)The op should update to explain that this story is over a decade old; then the op should report the actual outcome of the case. If we wanted to talk about the case after that -- knowing when it happened and what actually happened to the perps -- that would be more helpful I think.

(4,840 posts)if people post news articles from 13 years ago with no date. People are spreading this article like it happened today. That doesn't change the horrific nature of the crime but are we so desperate to express indignation that we need to look back 13 years ago to retrieve it? There's plenty of things going on right now, including the horrors of patriarchy, from which to select.
If we want to revisit and have a discussion on an older news story, by all means, let's do so. But, 1.) at least let everyone know the age of the story so they don't repost it everywhere like it's current news and, 2.) once it's been determined to be an old story, at least someone step in and edit the thread to reflect that.
