(44,130 posts)and I'm pretty sure he knows that isn't gonna happen.
Especially given the praise Obama heaped on him at that event.
BrotherIvan
(9,126 posts)But his fear might come from his twisted little soul. I don't believe he is a sociopath. We had a family friend who was one, and there was something so odd, so robotic about him. I think W. just wanted to one-up daddy and play in the big white house, so he didn't care what Cheney--the real sociopath-- et al were doing in the background. Do I think that makes him any less guilty? Nope.
And yes, I was appalled over the lovefest for W. I guess he can show up at conventions now. But I do expect this has a lot more to do with cleaning up the Bush name for Jeb than doing anything for little shrub.
Skittles
(153,149 posts)it's more of a WHAT THE FUCK IS *SHE* DOING HERE kind of look - that sociopathic bastard is incapable of feeling or looking guilty

(6,278 posts)I think he views her as providing absolution for his sins. When he sees how well she and other wounded veterans who do things like join him for 100k bike rides are doing, in his tiny RW mind it means the wounded can all do well if they just try, and that his war left no lasting scars - in fact, it gave Americans a chance to rise to the occasion and be great.
Just watch his press conference (the woman whose leg is in the picture is the one with him in the video, and speaks briefly starting around 1:59):
http://bcove.me/yk2goltv
At one point W mentions how tough the ride was, "especially if you're 65" and Dan, another amputee, chimes in, "Or have just one leg."
Anyway, I'm sure he sleeps like a baby... like any other sociopath would.

(5,442 posts)The suffering of others is completely out of his range of comprehension. How does being a healthy, intact, mobile, wealthy 65 compare to being an amputee who will live with the physical and the psychic wounds of war for the rest of their life?

(9,126 posts)I do find it hard to condemn her, she sounds like a very positive person and is making do far better than I certainly would. I blame HIM and that malevolent cur Cheney and all their demonic minions.

(6,278 posts)And notice the whole event - a bunch of hand-picked wounded veterans still well enough to engage in one of W's pastimes gather for a few days of reflecting on the awesomeness of teamwork and America. In speaking about the ride the one vet talks about how great it was to get help when he needed it and not get help when he didn't need it; metaphorically speaking, the message seemed to include the idea that a problem in America is people being offered help they don't really need...
The whole staged gathering is calculated to stroke Bush's ego and let him say pious words about "honoring our veterans" without ever coming face-to-face with anyone who might present a word or situation that might disturb him.

(6,278 posts)She's a Paralympian and triathlete whose certainly done well despite what W's war did to her, and to hear her tell it there seem to be no hard feelings. From her blog last year:
The last day the President rode along with Team Melissa and there he was himself, on my back wheel shouting Thatta girl Meliss and Thats what Im talking about as loud as he could. Pair that, all the teamwork and mountain bike adventures with being out there with fellow wounded vets, the President (who is a stud of a mountain biker) and I was left with such a high that kept me up for weeks after the event, feeling like the luckiest girl alive. And the President, wow. Politics aside, he is one of the most wonderful people I have met. Truly affected and emotional about the choices he made and how theyve affected all of us, a witty man, a great athlete, quite the fine dancer and a true American.
"affected and emotional?" Frankly, I don't care about whether he can produce tears on demand - what he did was criminally wrong, and no amount of appearing to care (sincerely or not) can right the evil he did.
Well, I'm happy for her ability to enjoy life and do great things. I'd guess she'd be pretty annoyed with the way we see the image of her prosthesis to symbolize the carnage W unleashed... but her personal regard for Bush doesn't validate his wars.

It's always best to look at things from as many perspectives as possible - creates a maturity for future battles. Our little girl soldier isn't on that path, yet. Probably alot of the male amputees are right up there with her.
Still, my respect goes out to her.
Stunning photo. Thanks.
